Had you heard this? - Leftcoast - 05-07-2010

Stanford\'s admissions director resigned to take the same post at NYU.   (Really!?)

Jake Curtis speculates that this change could impact basketball and football and given the recent past he\'s very likely to be right.   I\'m sure the coaches will worry about building the need to build their relationships all over again and hope that much of the old staff carries over.

The big boss of admissions is the dean, Richard Shaw: http://news.stanford.edu/news/2010/march/freshman-admit-letters-032910.html I don\'t know exactly where the director of admissions fits into the scheme of things, but the dean is the one who sets overall policies, including those vis a vis athletes. Until proven otherwise, I wouldn\'t expect this move to change the admissions office\'s relationship with the athletic department.

Who Shaw hires to replace this person could impact what many fans see as an improvement in the relationship with between the AD and admissions.   The director makes the trains run on time in daily operations and no doubt can influence/affect the workings of the  staff.
If he\'s aligned with Shaw\'s world view, then we\'ll be OK.  But there are hundreds of ways that a mid-level manager can impose personal views onto the final decisions of his staff.   We\'ll have to wait and see.
Knowing the process by which the AD and admissions work together, decide (and maybe appeal?) would be helpful,  but I\'m not sure that kind of information is voluntarily shared.

I wonder whether Jake Curtis understands how the admissions office works. He seems to think Abbott was Mamlet\'s successor. He doesn\'t seem to understand that Richard Shaw is the boss, not Abbott.

I don\'t know which admissions person is the contact person for basketball. For football, I believe the admissions person is Kiyoe Hashimoto. Harbaugh has often thanked Dean Shaw and Kiyoe Hashimoto for their contributions to the recruiting effort. I can\'t recall his mentioning Abbott. I\'m not sure what role Abbott has played in athletic admissions, if any. If anyone knows, I\'d be interested.
