She has already announced her retirement after the Olympics to move into the working world with McKinsey. Pat Forde wrote an excellent profile last week -

I lived in Toyon with Maya DiRado's dad when he was a frosh. Makes me even more of a fan of hers. Go, Maya!
Katie Ledecky starts her Olympic trials today with the 400 Free.

A retrospective on those who don't make the Oly team--including a nice bit on Michelle Griglione, Stanford swimming alumna.

I lived in Trancos with Michelle. Hadn't realized she was so close so often.

Katie Ledecky easily won the 400 Free (third fastest time all time) tonight.
Still has five events to go: 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 800 free, 400 IM.

Keep an eye out for Simone Manuel on Thursday who has the fastest incoming time in the 100 free.
Might as well throw this in as well - Stanford women have the #1 incoming recruiting class -

This post-race interview of Maya is a few days old, but just thought I'd post it here.

Simone Manuel finished 2nd in the 100 free to qualify for that event (and for the 4x100 relay), unfortunately Katie Ledecky finished 7th thus missing out on likely earning a medal in the relay by one position.

But Lia Neal finished 4th and *will* be on the relay team.
Unfortunately, David Nolan finished 3rd behind Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte in the 200 IM. No Olympics for Nolan unless Phelps or Lochte drops the event in Rio.

Also Simone Manuel and Lia Neal both made the finals in the 50 free to be competed tomorrow night.

Simone Manuel qualifies in the 50 free, finished 2nd by 0.05.

Ledecky could still swim in the prelims of the 4 x 100. If you are already on the team for another reason, you can go into the pool of relay swimmers, and thus get a medal for swimming in the relay. Doubt she will want to do that, though.
As far as Manuel is concerned, I found it hugely disconcerting that the commentators virtually ignored her leading up to the 100 finals, and actively rooted against her during and after the 50. If you don't fit into their pre-race narrative, you almost don't exist. Everything (other than the Ledecky fanfare) was about Missy Franklin, who frankly didn't perform any better than Manuel.
