WVBall beats #3 Minnesota 3-1 - Griffins78 - 08-28-2016

After slipping to unranked Univ. San Diego on Friday 2-3 and San Diego lost to #3 Minnesota 1-3 on Saturday, we were prepared for a probable loss today.

The Women came out smoking and won the first two sets easily. And should have swept in 3 but with the help of some and calls, bad luck, and a bit of whatever happened on Friday against San Diego, Stanford had match point a few times and lost the 3rd. No worries - set 4 and Stanford knocked off #3 ranked Minn.

This team is just starting out and Dunning is playing a lot of freshmen. They have a ways to go to figure out the players and for the team to gel but they are looking great.

Final score: 25-23, 25-15, 25-27, 25-19

There are 10 players in the rotation this year, with no one returning in the same position as last year. (Four freshmen, one returner who missed last year with an injury, one who was a serving sub last year, and four who have changed positions.)

Yippie.  A bigger test will come next weekend on the road.  Stanford almost always plays well at home and then sometimes breaks down on the road.

The Freshmen hitters looked great.  6'6" Kathryn Plummer (13 kills)and 6'6" Audriana Fitzmorris (also 13 kills and also 8 blocks) were awesome at times.  Inky looked a little rusty to me, if by rusty we note 9 kills and 8 blocks--it might just be that she has a stronger supporting cast than when she played two years ago, and won't wrack up quite the same numbers.  The stats were spread around pretty evenly, which is a good thing.

I thought our setting was not always sharp but I imagine that will improve as the season goes on.  It was split between Jenna Grey and Kelsey Humphries.  I think the announcer notes that we are going with 2 setters at a time instead of 1.  Jenna is a frosh.  So hard to replace graduated senior Madi Bugg without a little drop off at first.  But we beat a very good team while playing with a very young team.  We will only get better.

The TV announcers, who seemed pretty knowledgeable, noted that Lutz was good at smashing balls in odd positions--that were not set perfectly.  Went so far as to say that she had little control over where the ball went, but its unpredictability was an unintended advantage.  Also noted that we are the largest team at the NCAA level he has ever seen.  With a 6'8" and two 6'6" players, two 6'4" players, and then shorty Inky at 6'3"!  Yes, that seems tall!

The TV color man was Don Shaw, long time former Stanford coach. He coached both the women's and men's teams at different times.
