Here is an article claiming that Stanford is setting up physical "safe spaces" for students. Lots of negative comments about Stanford. Problem is that it's Sanford College at Duke, not Stanford, that did this. I assume they'll fix it sometime, including deleting picture of Stanford campus.

Delightful. I'm tempted to post a comment correcting them, but it's pretty funny to have this up there...

It's even worse than that. There's no "Sanford College" at Duke. My guess is that the "safe space" in question is at Duke's Sanford School of Public Policy.

Heatstreet has made the correction, but not Fox News. Hilarious, indeed.
Usually, Stanford is confused with Stamford, right? During my freshman year, I received a phone call from a buddy back home (he was a K-State student, I might add) at 4 a.m. who thought I was going to college in Connecticut.
On the other hand, I went home for spring break freshman year, and went to a party with a bunch of K-Staters. One of the girls whom I had just met asked me if I went to K-State. I told her I went to Stanford and was home on spring break. She looked puzzled and then asked me if Stanford was in Kansas City. I told her no. She puzzled some more and asked me if Stanford was in Topeka. I decided to let her off the hook and told her it was in California.

I once had a brobdingnagian snafu with my insurance company's communications with me, only to realize later that I had given my alumni.edu email address, and the lady had typed in sanford...*sigh*

I am afraid that it looks like you went to school a long time ago.
These days, with Stanford having the well publicized lowest admissions rate in the country and typically topping surveys as the #1 dream school of high school kids, there aren't many outside of south-western Connecticut confusing Stanford with Stamford. (And not really in south-western Connecticut, where Stanford is very much a top dream-school) .

In Alabama, I'm told, there's some confusion between Stanford and Samford University, which is in Birmingham.

A long time ago? I was at Stanford from 1980-85. Well, yeah, that was a long time ago.
Stanford a dream school? Not so much in Manhattan, Kansas.

I can attest. This has happened to me several times. The weird part is how a few seemed somehow disappointed that it was Stanford rather than Samford.Â

Well, maybe for one kid?
Or perhaps Stanford was just your safety after not getting into KSU?

Well, they should have learned in 2012 when Stanford derailed Oregon and opened a path for them.

NFL draft prospects from Samford are usually referred to as being from "Samford, not Stanford."

Haha, good point. At my high school, if you were going to college--which was not even close to a given--the likely choices were KSU or KU. Only one other member of my senior class of 400 went to college in California.

I had the same experience essentially. Replace Iowa State and Iowa for KSU and KU and also, not one other person in my class of 650 went to college in California. :-[

I wondered if you were from Nebraska or Iowa, CornFed. Yeah, many native west-coasters whom I have met consider Iowa and Kansas flyover states or, even worse, "back East." But to Kansans, the big city is Topeka (big--they had a mall), Kansas City (really big--they had Worlds of Fun and professional sports) or Chicago (the biggest). If folks visited Micky Mouse, they went to FL, not CA. Skiing was an 11-hour bus ride to CO. Spring break was a two-day drive to South Padre Island, TX.

To Iowans, the "big city" was Chicago, the bigger city was New York City and the biggest city was Paris, France. Or Omaha. :D

While shooting end zone coverage of Elway to Harry that beat THE Ohio State U in 1982 I overheard two disgruntled security guards speaking.
#1 "Where in Hell is Stanford?"
#2 "It's some Catholic school in California."
#3Â 90,000 fans, "silence."
