Week 1 Games of Interest -
ColoradoTree - 09-01-2016
Aside from our obvious game of interest on Friday evening, there are some other interesting matchups around the college football world that could have ramifications on overall conference perceptions when we start talking about playoff teams down the line.
Pac-12 Teams:
Thursday, September 1:
* Oregon State @ Minnesota. Not super exciting, but it's racking up wins like this that help make the case for the Pac-12 champ over another conference champ down the line. I'll be conflicted, though: since Minnesota is my second team, I'll be at a watch party for this game with other Minnesotans.Â
Result: Minnesota 30, Oregon State 23. Oregon State showed flashes, but just doesn't seem very good. That said, Minnesota is a popular pick to win or challenge in the Big Ten West, so maybe losing by 7 on the road to a team that will go bowling isn't too bad.Â
* Southern Utah @ Utah. Nothing to be gained, only to be lost.Â
Result: Utah 24, Southern Utah 0. The 0 is good, but folks will wonder about the 24. Whatever, a win in the first game is a win.Â
Friday, September 2:
* Colorado State vs. Colorado at Mile High in Denver. Colorado State isn't a bad team, and this is always a tough game, but still. Have to win this one.
* Us vs. them.
Saturday, September 3:
* Rutgers @ Washington. See the Oregon State-Minnesota comment above. Rutgers isn't good, but going 2-0 vs. the Big Ten in Week 1 is a statistic I want.Â
* #16 UCLA @ Texas A&M. Great opportunity for national exposure. Very winnable, but tough.
* UC Davis @ #24 Oregon. I don't want to talk about UC Davis.
* #20 SC vs. #1 Alabama in Arlington, TX. May SC at least acquit themselves well. Going 0-2 vs. the SEC in Week 1 is a statistic I really do not want.Â
* Eastern Washington @ Wazzu. A must-win, obviously, but EWU can be a dangerous FCS team.
* BYU vs. Arizona in Glendale, AZ. Basically a home game at the Cardinals' stadium, but this would be a nice win.
* Northern Arizona @ ASU. Just don't mess it up.Â
Non-Pac-12 Games:
Saturday, September 3:
* #3 Oklahoma vs. #15 Houston (technically a neutral site game, but it's at the Houston Texans' stadium).
* Bowling Green @ #6 Ohio State. Dare to dream.
* Hawaii @ #7 Michigan. Dare to dream, uh, more.
* #5 LSU vs. Wisconsin (at Lambeau Field in Green Bay). This one is at least a plausible upset, since it's basically a road game for LSU.
* #2 Clemson @ Auburn. I think Auburn will lose plenty of games this year, so here's hoping they give Clemson a run for their money at home.
Sunday, September 4:
* #10 N.D. @ Texas. As usual, I want ND to be highly ranked when we play them.
Monday, September 5:
* #11 Ole Miss vs. #4 Florida State in Orlando, FL. I think Ole Miss will pick up losses elsewhere, so I'm rooting for them here.

I'm rooting for Texas over UFDFG--I think the hype machine is sufficiently powerful enough to cast USB as a contender despite an early-season loss to Texas. I think UW should have an easy game against Rutgers if the Huskies are the contenders we think they might be. Oregon State vs. Minn, oof. I think Minn will win this one, but only just.
I hope Bama loses. I don't think Houston has much of a chance against OU, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.
Let the chaos begin!

I am rooting for whatever outcome will best convince Foster Sarell and Walker Little to say "I should go to Stanford"

That is the universe where Shawgren continue playcalling like it's the fifth quarter of the Rose Bowl (but with starters), and Stanford beats KSU 52-0. There's a natl championship at the end of the season in that universe :)

Some random thoughts...
Given all the Texas A&M issues with QBs transferring, the fact UCLA has a solid defense, and its own solid QB = UCLA win.
Southern Cal should hang with Alabama because that OL experience is too valuable to allow a Bama walkover.
Really interested to see Oregon State at Minnesota.Â
How will year two of Derek Mason at Vandy look?

It's year 3. Year 2 looked pretty bad, but not as awful as year 1!

I think the fact that the Oregon State game is in Minneapolis means that the Gophers will pull it out. Good secondary. Experienced (if not good) quarterback. Good running game. Excited home crowd. We'll see! I'll put aside my Pac-12 fandom for a few hours, but if the Beavers prove victorious, I can take solace in how it indirectly helps Stanford.Â

Well, that makes you and some guy over-doing it at a bar in Corvalis.
Though you'll have to sign up for the Big Ten Network to get it.

For those of you who enjoy SEChadenfreude, Appalachian State is up 10 on #9/#10 Tennessee at halftime.Â

Was just going to post. Go Mountaineers!
FYI, Tennessee is viewed as a dark horse National Championship contender from the SEC. Way overhyped IMHO.

How could you leave off the Rice v. Western Ky. tilt going on as I type?
Rice is down 30-7 at halftime. I continue to lament that Stanford scheduled an opponent that garners approximately zero interest nationally. At least it's at home...unlike next year, when it's two time zones away.
I might boycott watching these Stanford-Rice games. End rant.

Oregon State is giving Minnesota a real game. Down 14-17 halfway into the third quarter.
Re: Week 1 Games of Interest -

Got a safety, went three and out, and then recovered a fumble on the ensuing punt. Oregon State living right, I suppose.
Meanwhile poor App State could've made some better strategic decisions, but recovered only one of four fumbles, so...

OSU scores a TD, now up 23-17.

Oregon State looked like a legit team, despite their turnovers and losing to a middling Minnesota outfit. The Beavers may not be great, but they look significantly better than last year.

That's not what I saw out of the fourth quarter of the game. I don't think Oregon State is going to win a single conference game.

I didn't watch the 4th, but saw most of the first three quarters and thought they looked much better than last year.Â

I saw a team with a respectable defense and a meh offense -- which is a brobdingnagian step up from last year. If Stanford is as good as its preseason ratings it doesn't make a brobdingnagian difference, but certainly Oregon State fans will get to see decent football.

That was my take as well. I think they'll still struggle in conference, but they look improved over last year.
Have you ever seen a game where
three players for one team were ejected for targeting?
