WBB Kailee Johnson retires - BobK - 09-01-2016

A long rumor she will graduate in Dec and move on with her life

That will hurt our depth. Kailee's departure in addition to Lili's absence will put more impetus on the freshmen to contribute immediately. I had high hopes for her coming in as a freshman, but Kailee never fulfilled her promise as the 20th-ranked recruit in her HS class.

Team implications aside, all the best to Kailee in her future endeavors. I hope she will have tremendous success in her business career.

I am only surprised it took this long to make the announcement.  In that notable interview Tara did soon after Washington bounced us out of March madness she said:

Quote:VanDerveer was blunt about what some players must do to improve. She wants Thompson to pass more. “We need her to be unselfish and have a better turnover-to-assist ratio.”....Kailee Johnson “has to make a decision about her relationship with basketball. She’s fairly skilled and very smart, but how important is basketball to Kailee? I think she could be a lot better.”

I think this was the first public signal that Kailee had issues.  Given how Bob described Kailee as being such a dominant player in high school, it seems as if she was not as focused on basketball once she got to college, and never developed to her full potential.  We would only see little flashes every so often.  Well, Kailee clearly made the decision that Tara told her she needed to make.

That interview also might well be related in some way--whether cause or effect--of a ruptured relationship with Lili's family.

Notably, both players will graduate.  They made the right decisions academically, and Stanford is classy enough (apparently) not to cut their scholarships for non-performance.  It will be interesting to see if both players go on and play their final years elsewhere, and if so, where.  My guess would be Lili will and Kailee won't.

Wow. Also surprised it came this late. I wonder if her post-December plans depended in part on whatever he summer activities were? Otherwise it seems strange.

Best of luck to her whatever she is up to. It does make me wonder a little bit, with Rooks transferring to Harvard, Lili quitting, and now this. Seems like an unusual amount of discord in the past two seasons relative to the prior 10-15 years.

Let's also remember she kept having foot injuries, which may have contributed to her not reaching her potential. I see Rooks as different -- coming across the country to a new culture and not getting playing time when she could be closer to family and at Harvard. Also my sense is that transfers are more common in general today, and players (AND THEIR PARENTS) often less accepting of what it takes etc. and true teamwork attitudes.

True, constantly nagging foot injuries probably did not help.  I've been through that sort of thing with my athlete daughter.  Fighting your own body for years on end really grinds down the will.

The roster is already updated.  Stanford has 13 players on the roster for the season.  C.al has 12, UCLA has 13, so full rosters of 15 like we have had are not all that typical.  It will probably mean a little more action for a couple of male practice players.
