Harrison Phillips injury speculation thread - OutsiderFan - 09-03-2016

It's really hard to see how Phillips might have been injured.  On the play he went down, he wasn't even touched.  He came out of his stance, started his rush, and just sort of let up.  I thought maybe he pulled a muscle or something because his knee didn't get jostled.  To hear he had in ice wrap on his knee is a little confusing.  The TV showed him on the sideline after I think the Watkins Safety, and he looked grim and very unhappy, not celebrating with the other D-linemen, but he didn't appear to have anything wrapped on his knee either, nor was he on crutches or anything either.

I don't want to speculate, but how about this for a question. Is it the same knee as the one he injured? If something doesn't feel right to him obviously that's a brobdingnagian concern after all he's been through the past year.

I'm worried.  One doesn't have to be in contact to tear their ACL.  I was hoping a cramp but not

In the Olympics one of the Americans in the women's 5 K got hit went down then got up and finished the last 6 laps with an ACL.

He walked off under his own power, didn't he?

You can do that with an ACL tear or a few other pretty serious knee injuries. If it really was noncontact (it could've been from a previous play that didn't start hurting until he tried to really move, though) then we're probably looking at something like best case being a low-grade MCL injury and worst being another ACL. Who knows, though? Presumably we'll hear some news soon.

Whatever. Next man up. Oh God, Watkins.

Did Wesley Annan get in for a few plays after Phillips got injured?  He was listed in the participation report which may not be 100% accurate?  (It lists defensive players in the starting OL who have the same numbers as O lineman.  There is no offensive player with number 51, Annan's number.)

Annan is 56.  Swann is 51.

Solomon Thomas had a "56" written on his arm last night.  And Annan was on the sidelines, not in uniform.

Sorry, I meant Swann is in the participation report.  Did he play?

Stanford rotated Thomas, Phillips, Jackson, Watkins, Cotton and Luke. Losing Phillips is a disaster if so. Perhaps he's one of those guys who just gets hurt (Griffen, Rance).

He walked off under his own power, and he came back to the sidelines after being tended to.  IF it were a serious injury, it's unlikely he would have been standing on it for an hour in the second half.  In the post-game interview with Todd Husak, Shaw was pretty tight lipped, but he certainly gave the impression that if Phillips is out, it is for a couple weeks, not for months or the rest of the season.  Shaw even held out some hope that he'd be back for the USC game.  Of course, until the injury is defined and Phillips gets cleared to return to play, all bets are off.  I've seen plenty of "two week" injuries that sideline someone for two months, and plenty of severe seeming injuries that result in a "miraculous" recovery.  Most likely, though is out a couple games. Major bummer; when in, Phillips was a beast and we could use him against the Trojans OL.

After seeing Phillips standing on the sideline my thinking on the situation was...

He probably didn't hurt himself as much as scared himself.  He worked his tail off to rehab his knee and get ready to play yesterday and he was playing well, probably having a lot of fun.  He probably could have returned to play, but the medical staff wasn't going to take any chances.

He really is going to be needed against Southern Cal, just for his size.
