So the 1/2-game suspension was mandatory? That seems to show weakness on the part of their head coach. Maybe he's not even allowed to make such decisions, instead the call on this went to Lynn Swann.

Well, this is the same school that didn't suspend the head coach when he showed up drunk and swearing at a booster event.Â The more USC (d)evolves, the more it stays the same.Â

I can't even begin to imagine college players to practice with their teammates when under investigation for sexual assault.Â I know we are innocent until proven guilty, but there is a difference between being under arrest or convicted, and being allowed to practice with you teammates.Â Even if they are innocent, it is clear that they involved themselves in stuff that had they not, wouldn't have them under investigation.Â So instead of sending a message that you better use your best judgment, or you won't be part of the team, USC - a program that NEEDS discipline - does as little as possible to achieve it.Â No wonder they fail so miserably.

Every time I think my revulsion of all things SC might wane, something like this happens.Â The culture of this kind of behavior is so deep that it outlasts every change of coach and every change of AD.Â Our football players in 1977 talked about how SC kicked, punched, and otherwise played "dirty," in a way that went far beyond any other team.Â I suppose it is a little harder to get away with as much of it today--with every game televised from numerous angles--unless you are a particular idiot.Â But forty years (or more?) of cheating and bad sportsmanship points to something deeply embedded in the SC cesspool.

Re the 1/2-game penalty, it's no penalty at all if it was mandatory from the NCAA. Absurd. And it sends a clear message: USC's coaching staff doesn't care about instilling discipline or integrity.

Re the sexual assault investigations, I wonder how current students feel about this? Given the uproar on campuses about all things sexual assault these days, if students withheld their support from the team until more stringent actions were taken, I imagine that would get their attention. Then again, it's U$C students we're talking about, so taking a principled position is clearly out of the question.

Hmm, I'm not sure. The 1/2 game suspension for the next game is mandatory if the penalty was assessed in the second half. As far as I recall, the crotch stomping occurred in the first half.

If Lynn Swann okayed this "punishment", then he is now part of the problem.Â Looks like SOP for U$C athletic dept.
