Week 2 Games of Interest - ColoradoTree - 09-07-2016

Not many, frankly.  Not only is Stanford idle, but darn near every other team decided to schedule a cupcake.  So, it's hoping for upsets, I suppose (with the exception of our Pac-12 brethren, of course).  Here are all of the Pac-12 games and all of the national games that involve a Power 5 team against another Power 5 team (there ain't that many).

Pac-12

Saturday, September 10

* Utah State @ SC (-16.5).  I would assume SC would come out angry and with injured pride, but that assumes they have pride at all.
* Idaho @ #8 Washington (-37).  Nothing really to gain, just something to lose.
* Idaho State @ Colorado (no line).  Colorado should win handily.  Not sure why there's no line.  Maybe Idaho State injuries?
* BYU @ Utah (-3).  A real game!  This is arguably the best game of the weekend.  Of course, Gameday is going to Bristol Motor Speedway for a game between Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
* UNLV @ UCLA (-26).  Good opportunity to exorcise some demons.
* Texas Tech @ Arizona State (-3).  One of very, very few Power 5 vs. Power 5 matchups.  A nice opportunity at home.  The line indicates this is effectively a toss-up, with home field providing the margin.
* Washington State @ Boise State (-11.5).  I know Wazzu just laid an egg against a FCS team, but this line seems pretty surprising nonetheless.
* C.al @ San Diego State (-7.5).  More than a touchdown?  Huh.  I mean, I don't think C.al will be that great this year, but more than a TD seems high.
* Virginia @ #24 Oregon (-24.5).  Another P5vP5 matchup, even though UVA just got spanked by Richmond, so Oregon should roll.  Frankly, if they only win by the spread, it'll be a disappointment, given how awful UVA looked.
* Grambling State @ Arizona (no line).  I would expect Arizona to win solidly, but Grambling isn't a pushover FCS team.  Not sure why there's no line yet.

National

Friday, September 9

* #13 Louisville (-14.5) @ Syracuse.

Saturday, September 10

* Penn State @ Pitt (-6).
* Wake Forest @ Duke (-5)
* Kentucky @ Florida (-17)
* South Carolina @ Mississippi State (-6.5)
* Arkansas @ #15 TCU (-7.5).  Guess I'll root for TCU to take the loss?
* Iowa State @ #16 Iowa (-15).  That's a big line for a game that's usually close.  The teams have split the last four matchups, with the home team winning each time.  Of course, Iowa State just lost to FCS Northern Iowa, so Vegas probably has it right.
* North Carolina (-9) @ Illinois
* Virginia Tech @ #17 Tennessee (-11.5).  The game is at Bristol Motor Speedway, so this is where Gameday will be.

Seriously, that's it.  That's the list.  Nobody good plays anybody good, so we're left hoping for unlikely upsets, like Central Florida at Michigan, Charleston Southern at FSU, Troy at Clemson, Tulsa at Ohio State, and Western Kentucky at Alabama.

Re: Week 2 Games of Interest - CowboyIndian - 09-07-2016

So basically...after all the sound and fury over the quality of the schedule on week 1...we've traded week 1 of previous years for week 2 this year.

Re: Week 2 Games of Interest - TreesAndBirds - 09-07-2016

Probably best for college to get their first quality games in before the NFL starts, rather than the same weekend.

I can see that, and that well may be.  But it still is a letdown.  I don't see a single game that is worth me sitting down for a few hours to watch the whole thing.  I'll keep an eye on the Pac-12 games, I suppose, particularly BYU-Utah, Texas Tech-ASU, and UVA-Oregon.  But there are only so many hours in the weekend, and I'm not so desperate to watch college football that I'd choose Va Tech-Tennessee over playing with my kids.

Re: Week 2 Games of Interest - fullmetal - 09-07-2016

I watch Stanford Football; everything else can be summarized and read online later in much shorter amounts of time...

Fair enough.  It's the only must-watch game each week.  But I like to see how future Stanford opponents play and consider how Stanford will match up against them.  Rarely will I watch an entire game like that, but I'll follow along on my phone and turn on the TV at key points in multiple games.  On non-conference weeks like this, I follow the Pac-12 games fairly closely (I watched the 4th quarter of UCLA-A&M after having followed along on my phone, and I watched the first quarter of SC-Bama before turning my phone off and going to a play--imagine my surprise when I checked the score at intermission!).

Lines for games involving FCS teams usually come out later in the week.

Watching one game a week and reading summaries of the rest is the only way I could ever survive fantasy football...ditto basketball.  But fantasy baseball is out of reach for sure.  There lies the domain of madmen and wizards.

Re: Week 2 Games of Interest - needle - 09-08-2016

I will be interested to see how many points Western Kentucky scores against 'Bama. I suspect more than USC, but we'll see.

With two young kids, I live my life on the razor's edge of sanity and howamIgonnafititallin basically all the time, so I see how much time friends of mine devote to fantasy sports and I politely decline.

I had the same problem - Redrum - 09-08-2016

my answer: Make them watch Stanford football when young.  It worked, sort of.  My oldest watched when I made her.  She ended up at Stanford for undergrad and graduate.  Downside?  After freshman year, she only actually went to games when I showed up to see them in person. She was a good sport but the inoculation didn't take.  Round two:  Youngest daughter watched football but drew the conclusion that she should support a team that won more than it lost.  So she went to Bama and became a brobdingnagian fan.  Worse, on a weekly basis she would verbalize the comparison between each school's weekend result.  Still does, but is much nicer about it.

Re: Week 2 Games of Interest - ColoradoTree - 09-08-2016

Oh, I try to make my 5yo watch Stanford games with me, which he'll sometimes do.  If it's a night game, he'll happily do it as a way to stay up later.  If it's a day game, he'd rather be running around outside with his little friends.  The 2yo can't sit still long enough to make it enjoyable for anyone, so we're not quite there yet with him.

I can handle Stanford fandom, and paying reasonable attention to the other games that are out there.  But people seem to invest so much time into fantasy that I just don't feel like I can make that happen.

Re: Week 2 Games of Interest - Nan3cy - 09-08-2016

When my son was young, I had family plan tickets to the games. He was good for a half on a good day. He wound up in an Ivy, where football is a complete afterthought, and is no kind of a fan now. Not everything can be explained by genetics!  ;)

My 8 yo is just starting to sit still to watch most of a game when available.

Of course here on the east coast, basically all of the games go well beyond his bedtime. So, he gets to stay up late but almost never sees a game end.

He has always done much better live - lots of cheering, excitement and distractions. Actually watching the game doesn't have to happen so much.

Don't tell me that Nan3cy!!!!

My five y/o son will watch with me for about a half, my 7 y/o daughter will do the whole game, and even asks to watch soccer and volleyball (especially on the women's side).

Then again, my dad grew up watching games from the endzone of the old stadium with his father. My first football memory other than the Seahawks was at age 10ish watching Elway beat the Huskies while living in Husky territory.

My kids could both say "Go Stanford" by 19 mo. I have hope they will be true fans still.

I guess that's why I'm getting all my bachelorhood out of the way now... :P

I saw that two out of five ESPN analysts picked SDSU to beat kal.  I mean, really?  Whoa.

Re: Week 2 Games of Interest - jacketree - 09-08-2016

My son's first real football game (i.e. One at which he could whine using English) was Stanford-ASU when he was 3 years old. Warm early October on the sunny side. Not only did he last through warm ups, the first half, halftime, the second half and post game LSJUMB during a lopsided loss without complaint, he was riveted. Never took his eyes off the field. Two forced potty breaks was it.

He wound up playing four years in high school, four years at Navy and is now a co-defensive coordinator while he waits for his slot at The Basic School. We text and talk constantly during CFB season. He face timed me Saturday from Boston where one of his similarly situated coaching buddies was wearing my son's official red Nike McCaffrey jersey. Colin hails from Iowa and Navy SEALS honor bets.

You sound more proud of this than his graduation from Annapolis!

SDSU won the MWC last year and was 11-3 last year destroying Cincy in the Hawaii Bowl. They're picked to win the MWC this year (or, at least picked to win their division), compared to the Hawaii team Kal played in week 1 who was picked last in the MWC. I'd be surprised if SDSU didn't beat Kal (Sagarin has them fairly close, though, with SDSU slightly ahead).
