Quenton Meeks, Future Coach - OutsiderFan - 09-07-2016

Though I like Solomon Thomas a lot, the most impressive player on Stanford's defense, to me, is Quenton Meeks. He already has 4 interceptions in his Stanford career, and one of the main reasons is because how much he studies the game.  This interview by Drukarev makes him sound like a coach already:

For the more casual fans who don't know this, Quenton's dad was a NFL defensive backs coach for many years.  Like father, like. . .

I also love Meeks. Love him. You know that moment in the stands when someone behind you is saying something about the game that you disagree with, and you fight that inner battle about whether or not to turn around and correct the misguided fan? I usually try to take the high road, but I couldn't help myself when someone was disparaging Meeks at the Rose Bowl. I described the conversation in my recap of the game:

Quote:Only minutes earlier a conversation between the knowledgable fans behind us had turned to the development of Stanford's young defensive backs, and one gentleman explained that he wasn't yet sold on Quenton Meeks, the true freshman nickelback who had rescued the Cardinal's season with two interceptions against Washington State. I couldn't hold my tongue. I turned around to defend one of my favorite players on the team. "Are you kidding? Quenton Meeks is an absolute stud!" I exclaimed. "Two years from now you and I will be sitting here in the stands of the 2018 Rose Bowl, and we'll see him for what he is -- Stanford's next great cornerback."

It was a pointless conversation, but perhaps my words had carried down to Mr. Meeks's ears. On 3rd and 3 from the Stanford 36, Meeks lined up across from slot receiver Matt VandeBerg and twitched before the snap as if ready to pounce. VandeBerg ran a soft out pattern to the sideline, but it was far too soft. Meeks saw what was coming immediately, jumped the route, and snagged Beathard's pass at the 34. Like McCaffrey's touchdown on the game's opening snap, this play was a touchdown as soon as the ball hit Meeks's hands, so I must confess to missing part of his sprint down the sidelines. While all around me were celebrating, I turned around to punctuate my earlier conversation with the Doubting Thomas behind me. We couldn't speak, of course, what with the bedlam erupting around us, but I pointed at him in triumph, and he admitted defeat, jokingly bowing down in my direction.

A bit OT, but I have a good feeling that watching our talent at DB is going to be very special in the next two years.  Prior to the last several years, talented DBs at Stanford were few and far between by my recollection. Can anyone remember another time we had this much talent and depth in a secondary?

The only other year that comes close that I can recall was in 2013 we ran with Reynolds, Richards, Brown, and Carter, which is arguably superior at both safety positions and potentially one cornerback position, though I'd argue that as a sophomore Meeks is superior to Carter.  That group was lacking in depth behind the starters, which is extremely important in this age of the spread and having the nickel be essential a base defense.

We are currently in the Golden Age of Stanford defensive backs, and we can thank Richard Sherman and Duane Akina. Stanford has become a destination for defensive backs looking towards the NFL, and my guess is that several of the guys on the current roster will end up there.

I look forward to re-naming what I've dubbed the "Richard Sherman Effect" to the "Quenton Meeks Effect."

Re: Quenton Meeks, Future Coach - fullmetal - 09-08-2016

Hennessy was known to have said that Stanford wouldn't win a NC until we could recruit DBs (because that is the hardest position for Stanford to recruit).  I'm feeling good about our newfound position group strength.

Re: Quenton Meeks, Future Coach - CompSci87 - 09-08-2016

We have so much depth at DB that we could afford to move one to WR -- Taijuan Thomas.

Re: Quenton Meeks, Future Coach - Spiny_Norman - 09-08-2016

I await the Stanford class that includes an elite corner on the level of Jabrill Peppers, Vernon Hargreaves or Minkah Fitzpatrick.  As long as Akina is at Stanford, there is a chance for someone like that to make the commitment.
