Don't look now, but... - OutsiderFan - 09-10-2016

Howard leads Rutgers 14-0 not even 5 minutes into the game.  So anyone looking for reason to take away something from Washington's "impressive" 48-13 win against the Scarlet Knights, may have season to today.

Rutgers may be the worst Power 5 team in the country.  UW's opponent today, Idaho, is one of the worst in FBS.  And they play Portland State next week.

Re: Don't look now, but... - CowboyIndian - 09-10-2016

They're building self esteem.

Re: Don't look now, but... - French Rage - 09-10-2016

The same Howard, it should be noted, that last to BC 76-0 last year.  (I know, different team, but still...)

Re: Don't look now, but... - 82lsju - 09-10-2016

late in the second quarter Clemson leads Troy 13-10.....

Re: Don't look now, but... - dabigv13 - 09-10-2016

Hilarious Clemsoning moment there on the punt return shoulda been TD, dropping the ball before crossing the line. Love it.

Re: Don't look now, but... - ThePassionOfTheChryst - 09-10-2016

Currently 49-14 Rutgers.

Re: Don't look now, but... - washingtonismoney - 09-10-2016

Believe the spread was -35 so it seems Rutgers ultimately performed up to expectations, despite the somewhat winding road there.

Re: Don't look now, but... - fullmetal - 09-10-2016

Also, the Ok St. Cowboys just lost (undeservedly) to the Central Michigan Chippewas.  Cent. Michigan was wrongly awarded an untimed down at the end of the game after OSU attempted to run out the clock on fourth down with a passing play where no receivers ran routes(illegal grounding)...and CMU proceeded to throw the ball 42 yards, lateral, and score.

Good job, Mike Gundy.

Barry J had one rush for 4 yds and two receptions for 2 yds total.  Free Barry J!  :(

Re: Don't look now, but... - stupac2 - 09-10-2016

Maybe Barry J just isn't very good? I think at this point that's a fair conclusion to draw.

Re: Don't look now, but... - fullmetal - 09-10-2016

Yeah.  But I have no qualms about a bad OSU team playing Barry J.  If OSU is going to stink (admittedly the refs' fault and some coaching blunders), they might as well feature a sentimental favorite.

I've maintained all along that he should have gone to an Ivy for his fifth season.  He's really good at the D1 level, he'd be a star at D1-AA and would have had a jump start on the next 40 years.

I just want to point out that while by the letter of the rule there should not have been an extra down, the rule is flawed and illogical. It's clearly designed to not give the offensive team an extra play after a loss of down penalty, but should (and does not) have an exception for situations where the loss of down causes a change in possession. I'm guessing the rule gets rewritten as soon as it can (next offseason?) to add that exception.

I would argue that perhaps #22 Oklahoma State did deserve to lose, by virtue of holding just a four point lead that late in the game (at home) over such subpar competition.

And allowing a hail mary hook and ladder combo...

After one quarter, FCS Jacksonville St. is outplaying LSU.  LSU sat their starting QB to start the 2nd quarter.

I disagree.  They put themselves in a position to let the officials decide the game, and they screwed up.

Re: Don't look now, but... - OutsiderFan - 09-11-2016

Though the game officials made a call on the untimed down when the rulebook has no such stipulation, if you look at it logically, the rulebook is flawed in the spirit of that particular play.  Breaking it down...

1. It was 4th and 13 with 4 secs on the clock
2. OSU had all 11 players in tight when it snapped the ball
3. CMU was coming after the OSU QB, who was in shotgun
4. He threw the ball away, out of bounds, between the tackles, with no receivers even going down field
5. Had the QB been sacked, with time on the clock, CMU would have taken over where he was sacked
6. There was time on the clock when the OSU QB threw the ball
7. Had he not thrown it away to avoid the sack, CMU would have had the ball with 1 second left on the clock
8. OSU "cheated" CMU out of the sack, by committing an intentional grounding penalty

OSU had any number of options with 4 secs left:

1. Punt the ball
2. Receivers go down field and lob up a pass OOB as time expired
3. QB could have taken the ball and ran backwards until the clock expired

So although the rulebook says there isn't an untimed down when the offense commits a penalty in that situation, given the circumstances of the play, the rulebook should stipulate that situation is handled exactly as it was, IMO.  It absolutely seemed like the right call logically at the time, which is probably why Mike Gundy didn't raise hell and take out his copy of the rulebook to show the refs.

I have no problem with the officials "blowing the call" because the outcome was absolutely justified to me.  The idea that a team can clinch a win by committing such a flagrant penalty like intentional grounding in that situation, does not sit well with me.

Re: Don't look now, but... - dabigv13 - 09-11-2016

See how it took a couple paragraphs to cogently (and correctly) make your point? The unwashed CFB hordes need something simpler, and the media obliged, so the majority of football fans now simply think OSU was screwed for some reason because of some stupid refs who don't know the rules.

Hopefully the rules are changed as soon as possible though.

Was that your opinion when UC-Davis's INT on their go-ahead drive "didn't happen?" :(  Officials have to get it right.

I'm not absolving the officials at all.  They do need to get calls correct.  I'm just saying when you put yourself in a position to let officials decide the outcome, sometimes you are going to lose.
