Baseball wins home opener - sheriand - 02-22-2011
Stanford played its first home game at Sunken Diamond tonight against Cal and won 3 - 2. Â There was a good size crowd (1900 +) for a very cold Tuesday night, with a decent size Cal rooting section. Â The scoreboard recognized the very long playing history between the two teams (280 games over more than 100 years), and Cal fans outside the stadium solicited help in a campaign to save their program. Â Jordan Pries started and got the win. Â Freshman A.J. Vanegas came in next and after a rocky first inning, giving up two runs, settled in and pitched very strongly. Â Scott Snodgress pitched the last three innings and closed out the top of the ninth with two runners on. Â Satisfying win, but also sadly bittersweet as we will miss the rivalry!

I did not take the flyer as I walked out, but I did hear them mention that they have a Facebook page. Â Hard to imagine any path to saving Cal baseball at this point...

Once terminated that less than $5 million annual deficit justification will be over. Â The team should only return if the AD has a balanced budget, like UCLA has accomplished on a reasonably consistent basis.
There is a chance that it could happen in 2012-13. Â That year the Fox TV revenue will really kick in and Memorial Stadium reopens. Â And just many other public entities the UC could decide that the one year filled with one year events will somehow be sustainable enough to justify a new multi-year expense.
