WVB - Round 1 of Stanford vs UW this week goes to the Cardinal - Spiny_Norman - 09-29-2016

Stanford women's volleyball team beat UW in 5 sets last evening.  It was Stanford's first win in Seattle since 2012.

Although the team is playing without Hayley Hodson (unspecified injury), the freshmen and the veterans seem to be working together well.  Stanford is 3-0 in Pac 12 matches and plays at WSU on Friday which also is undefeated after beating UW and UCLA.  Should be a very tough match.

The service errors in the 5th set sure raised my blood pressure. But the team played great otherwise when it counted.

BobK, anything you can share on Hodson?

I would also be interested to hear about Hodson.  I see her on TV gingerly walk out to the huddle after a match.  It doesn't look promising.  I get the feeling she may be out the rest of the year.  If she is out for the balance of the season, has she gone past the 1/3 threshold to be eligible for a medical redshirt?

Hodson can redshirt.    However people get confused.  If a medical redshirt she also can't practice the rest of the season.  In other words truly out for the season

Then you have the 2020 Olympics.  If she thinks she has a shot and she just spent her would have been Sr year of HS with the national team then why would she play a 5th year at Stanford.

Shin problems it appears but we don't really know.

Re: WVB - Round 1 of Stanford vs UW this week goes to the Cardinal - M T - 09-30-2016

In the TV broadcast of the Stanford@Cal match, the announcers say (before play starts) that Haley is "dealing with stress and inflammation in her lower legs and feet.  The only thing you can do is to rest and get healthy."

Inky may have learned a lot on the bench, but I hope Haley doesn't get that opportunity!

The Washington match was unusually streaky.  I felt our comebacks strengthen the view that we may really have a top team, even this year.  We have so many individually good players.

I don't know the VB rules that well, but given that our server had only her left foot down (and clearly inside the side lines by at least 2 feet) when she contacted the ball, I'd be surprised if the ruling of the head referee, that she was beyond the side lines, was correct.  Yes, her right foot had been out of the side lines, last it was down, but it was clearly off the ground when she contacted the ball.  Anyone know the rule? (NCAA site is down at this moment, so I can't look them up.)

I didn't see too many other calls that I disagreed with.  On the 5th point of set 3 (1:15 of broadcast), we hit a ball that bounced at the judge's feet and she called it long, but it was clearly in.    The second Washington setter #22 did a one-handed set well above the top of the net (4th set 7-9) when she was in the back row.  I thought that was illegal, but again I don't know the rules that well.  But all in all, a good officiating job I thought.
