Really good, as we all know:
"Stanford CB Quenton Meeks has allowed a 20.1 QB rating on throws into his coverage, best in the Pac-12."

Did Meeks come back into the game after his personal foul and ... conversation with Shaw?

Not sure. But it wasn't a personal foul; it was an unsportsmanlike conduct for yapping at the ref.
And yeah, in 6 games that Meeks played, Stanford allowed 13, 10, 13, 10, 10, and 10 points, and Stanford is 5-1. In the two games he was out, we allowed 44 and 42 points, and we are 0-2.

Perhaps the #4 CB in the country:

I think Meeks is channeling Richard Sherman, in more ways than one.

Is Quenton Meeks the best cornerback that Stanford has ever fielded? Sherman became great towards the end of his career at Stanford. I can't think of anybody else and my memory only goes back to Darrien Gordon and my memory of him has gotten hazy.

Wilner openly asks whether the two best players ever at Stanford at their position (Solomon Thomas and Quentin Meeks) are playing together on the defense.

They are certainly among the best ever at their positions.

Benny Barnes might quibble.

So might Rich Keller. As for Solly, Donovan, Stillwell and McColl might disagree and in the days of six man lines Paul Wiggen might quibble.

I would reserve judgment until their careers are over but it seems reasonable that Meeks and Thomas could be the best ever (Stanford) at their positions when all is said and done. In addition to those already mentioned I would submit the following candidates:
CB: Toi Cook
DE: Garin Veris, Willie Howard

Well, the best defensive backfield in my Stanford fandom memory was Darrien Gordon, Vaughn Bryant, John Lynch, and Seyon Albert in 1992. Probably by a large margin.

I think the unit next year (Meeks, Holder, Buncom, Justin Reid and Ben Edwards), assuming health, have a shot at being in that league.

1970: Kauffman, Schultz, McCloud, Barnes.

I saw a dozen of Benny Barnes' games, and he wasn't as dominating as Quenton. Randy Poltl may have been the best CB in that era--and he wasn't, either. Quenton scares opposing quarterbacks.Â

I may be a bit biased, but Willie Howard will always be the greatest defensive lineman at Stanford in my eyes. Thomas is phenomenal though.

Yes.

Methinks there could be a bit of recency bias going on. Having said that, there's no doubt that Meeks is great.

Yes, some recency bias. However, CB has been a notoriously difficult position for us to recruit for, but, recently, we have had much more talent on average, and specifically in the defensive backfield. So, it would not be surprising if a lot of the "best ever players" have come since 2009.

Also if the question is "who is the best in absolute terms?" then the answer is almost certainly someone recent, since athletes are generally getting better with time.
