OT: Luke Cage - BostonCard - 10-30-2016
Good show on Netflix... with a Stanford reference. When a corrupt councilwomen lands herself in some controversy, she is visited by a "pretty-boy Stanford carpetbagger" (the show takes place in Harlem). Seems inspired by a certain former city councilman (and later mayor) of Newark come New Jersey Senator.

Was "carpetbagger" not a derogatory Civil War-era term southerners used for northerners?

That is the origin of the term, refering specifically to northerners who went to the South during the reconstruction to seek elected office. Now, it just means any transplant who runs for political office in an area where they don't really have deep ties, or have lived only for a short time. It still carries derogatory connotations, and was meant that way by the councilwoman who was speaking to her political rival in the show.
