Special Teams Very Highly Ranked - BigEasyCard - 11-02-2016

"Football Outsiders rank Stanford's special teams as the third-best in the nation and ESPN has it fourth."

Details at Question 5 in this link:  http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/11/stanford_football_qa.html

Now, if only the offense can live up to its potential for the rest of the season....

Special teams have done a terrific job with one possible exception:  it seems like we have far too many illegal blocking penalties on returns.

Re: Special Teams Very Highly Ranked - fullmetal - 11-02-2016

It's possible our returns team has a brobdingnagian illegal blocking issue.  It's also possible that refs are scrutinizing our returns very carefully knowing that CMac could score on any given return.  Ugh.  Those pesky phantom illegal blocks (see KSU).

I also believe that our special teams suffer a grave shortcoming.  I do not think that we should be hitting the goal post upright so frequently on field goal attempts.

That's just Ukropina showcasing his pinpoint accuracy. He even hit the TOP of the left upright against UDFG - how many kickers can you say have done that?!

Re: Special Teams Very Highly Ranked - fullmetal - 11-02-2016

Clearly hitting the uprights deserves 4 pts per attempt.  It's a much harder feat than splitting them.

Hitting an upright is just a random occurrence that isn't worth any extra points IMO, but hitting a specific upright should be worth 5. Ukropina is obviously shooting for the left upright only. Even his recent makes have been just inside that upright.

Yeah, that's it.  Prior to attempting the extra point or field goal, the team has to notify the official of the upright for which they will be aiming and, if successful, the team will be awarded some enormous number of bonus points!!  Gotta call your shot.  Cool.  Think of how exciting the end of games might become.  Wow!!!!

Re: Special Teams Very Highly Ranked - BigEasyCard - 11-02-2016

During the Notre Dame game, fullmetal and I had a lively conversation (aided by alcohol and oysters) about the probability of a kicker hitting the upright.  It seems that the probability would vary depending on distance and whether or not he was trying to split the uprights, or hit one deliberately.

Anyone care to offer an opinion about the probabilities for either scenario?
