The Downfield Passing Game -
Hank 91 - 11-07-2016
Much has been made of the current lack of a downfield passing game. Because it's often hard to judge what's going on when you're only watching the games on TV, I have a question for the folks who are in the stadium. I know we weren't even looking to pass during the fourth quarter last week, but what about earlier? Do we have receivers running routes down field? Does it ever appear that these receivers are open? I guess what I'm asking is this -- how much of this is scheme and how much is execution?

we tried at least one long downfield pass, I think too Rector, but Chryst overthrew him by about two or three yards.

Execution--Rector had a step on two defenders heading downfield vs. Oregon St., but Chryst overthrew him by about three steps (ok, maybe two). If Stanford could consistently average 5+ yds per play, I think close-but-no-cigar downfield home run attempts would be much easier to chance, but we can't be missing on those all the time. Chryst et al. need to work that out in practice more before they can bring it on Saturdays.

I remember those plays to Rector. It seems like we've got either passes five yards from the line of scrimmage or those handful of deep shots, but nothing in between. The good news, I suppose, is that that's kind of what things looked like in 2014, especially in the Rose Bowl against Michigan State, but things got better. I trust things will get better here.

Shaw mentioned being disappointed in missed deep passes to Rector in this game, and the one before, and the one before, during his post-game presser. Around the 15:20 mark, he says Chryst was making those deep throws in practice. Can't treat a two-game starter like a 4th year veteran, he just needs more (live) reps, seemed to be the gist of his message.
Still can only locate the presser on team's facebook page:

I don't necessarily disagree with the string of 29 consecutive run plays, but could we have gotten a couple more deep ball live reps in there on Saturday? :p
