Cal thinks they've overcorrected on academics - amartinsu13 - 11-13-2016

Thought y'all would get a laugh out of this.  Bear thread discussing if they think Cal has made the academic bar TOO HIGH to be competitive in the Pac12.

I guess not everyone can be Stanford ;)

This line of reasoning has been mentioned in a few of the UCB Pac-12 AfterDark games now, so I believe the idea is coming directly from Dykes and his staff.

Dykes has a bit of a problem beating the better Pac-12 teams each season.  So either
#1 he is not a good coach
#2 he is not a good recruiter or
#3 the school's academic requirements are impacting his program.

#1 and #2 impact his odds of keeping his job and finding a new job later.  #3 is a ready made excuse that allows him to keep losing AND will enable him to get another job by blaming UCB for his failures at UCB.

Most of the posts over there more or less state this is a stupid excuse.

On the other hand, it is true that not everyone can be Stanford.
Given the current scholastic distribution of talented football players in high schools, there is not room for very many successful college teams with serious academic qualifications for football players. There are clearly enough for a few - as some private universities with some kind of standards are competing well and there are several good students on football teams sprinkled around the country. But Stanford has a decided advantage recruiting those kids; and the numbers are such that it gets tougher and tougher for each team that tries to go that route.

One would like to think that if enough places started really requiring decent academics, the pool of players would respond and there would be an increase in football-kids paying attention to academics. But, that isn't where we are now.

I don't think they need to worry about overcorrecting:

Kal is a joke. They should be trying like hell to fix their graduation rate problems.

From last year, when their football grad rate increased by a single percentage point to 52 percent:

Quote: Still, Cal football was last among schools in the Power Five conferences — the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC — for the third year in a row.
