Blogging with the Bares - Hank 91 - 11-18-2016

Last week I struck out with all three Oregon contacts I had, but the series is back today with the folks from California Golden Blogs. I found out some interesting things. Obviously Sorry Yikes has never beaten Stanford, but did you know that he's never beaten a team from California? We're the Kings of Cali, they're the Serfs of Cali. The California Golden Serfs? Also, they're still really mad about Shayne Skov, which is nice.

Anyway, here's the link:

Dykes' lack of success against top teams is mentioned often by those that cover UCB actually.  Dykes has been successful outscoring bad teams, but better teams and/or teams with talent on D have consistently shut down UCB's O.  And, of course, almost every program has been able to score points on Dykes' Ds.

Just one of the many reasons I would not trade any part of the Stanford formula for any part of the UCB formula.  Dykes pattern is very predictable at this point.  Early in the season a healthy team beats up on early season cupcakes, but defense suffers some injuries during the lengthy games with very high snap counts.  In the middle of the season a less healthy team still finds a way to outscore some conference teams, but loses to many others.  By the end of season the snap count takes a toll on the offense too, and the defense is demoralized and depleted.  Dykes finds excuses in the injuries and the staff while the November losses mount.

2016 isn't the first season in this pattern.  Must be frustrating for UCB alums, but great for Stanford since Big Game is held near the end of the season.

I'd bet a dollar Sonny Dykes winds up at Baylor.

Well, I think I'd bet a dollar that Baylor would not want him as their head coach. I could see him ending up there as an OC or something.

Going from bad Bears to bad news Bears...at least he's be back in his home state of TX.  Yuck, I hope he stays in CA...

Re: Blogging with the Bares - BostonCard - 11-18-2016

Wow, because of the California agreement during Pac-12 expansion, Cal has to play Stanford, USC, and UCLA every year.  That's a 0-3 hole he has had to climb out of every year as coach.  May this year be no different.

I still blame Harbaugh for that 2009 loss.  You're in the red zone trying to score the Axe-winning TD and you don't give the ball to your senior RB whom you have rode all season and instead ask your rookie QB to win it?

But seriously Hank, that's some bad mojo to even bring that game up.  Tsk tsk.

Almost every article lists Dykes among the 4-5 names being tied to the Baylor job. It's not going to be easy for Baylor to land an elite coach so they may need to set their sights in the Dykes range. Their clear first choice is Mike McIntyre, who has done an extraordinary job at Colorado, is baptist and has a daughter at Baylor. Will be interesting to see if McIntyre has interest in that job or waits for another opening.

Thanks for sharing. I'm thinking the "Hesiman" spelling in paragraph 2 is a Freudian reaction to your posting here and running afoul of the all-mighty software. :)

Baylor is dreaming if it thinks it can lure Coach Mac away from Colorado.  That's a better job than Baylor thinks it is, and Baylor isn't as good a job as they think it is.

I think the bigger issue is that MacIntyre will have better options than the toxic Baylor job.

However, with respect to the relative merits of the Colorado and Baylor jobs, consider that Baylor football has many more resources than Colorado football, and that while MacIntyre earns about $2.4 million/year, Art Briles was being paid $6 million/year.

I love reading how these guys are still thinking about Shayne Skov. Maybe we should adopt a new term for the CARDboard to recognize this - Skov Derangement Syndrome.

There were some extenuating circumstances in that game. First there was only a minute to go and we were just about out of time outs (maybe we had one). The ball was on Kal's 11 and there wouldn't have been time to give the ball to Toby and pound it in. Also, Toby was gassed from having just run about 60 yards to put us in that position. I think Harbaugh's decision to have Luck throw was at least defensible.

Re: Blogging with the Bares - BostonCard - 11-19-2016

Speaking of Baylor, Kansas State is up 28-14 on them.

Just for the record, UC defeated San Diego St. last year.
