CMAC Is Back on Top - martyup - 11-21-2016

He is back to #1 in all purpose yards.

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - CornFed - 11-22-2016

He's actually third in total APY, but the two players ahead of him have each played one more game.  He leads in APY per game.

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - Canalejas - 11-22-2016

How many yards does he need against Rice to take the top spot?

CMAC tops the chart on a per game basis but is 41 yards behind McNichols in total APY for the season. All of the the top 3 presumably will play in 2 more games.  So lets hope CMAC gets his 2nd year atop the list.

1 Jeremy McNichols Boise St JR RB 11 2097
2 Donnel Pumphrey SDSU SR RB 11 2058
3 Christian McCaffrey Stanford JR RB 10         2056

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - Papa John - 11-22-2016

I think that SDSU and Boise State are both in the running for the Mountain West championship game, so that could mean three more games for McNichols and/or Pumphrey.

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - cardcrimson - 11-22-2016

How many yards does he need to get to NYC? 500?

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - Papa John - 11-22-2016

I believe that the single-game all-purpose yards record is 578. That ought to do the trick.

Than 579 it shall be!  He'll be running through owls like Rice-A-Roni through a goose.  Let's say 150 returning kickoffs, 100 returning punts, 125 recieving, and 203 rushing.  Piece of cake for CMAC.

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - Phogge - 11-22-2016

Peppers is the best player in the country but he won't win the Voldemort. Just like last year when the best player with the best year ever, didn't win.

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - Ronnietrader - 11-23-2016

Peppers is a bit overrated on defensive side of the ball.  Not good in coverage (was thrown over top twice against Colorado when he went back as safety in his hybrid role) and is too small as a LB.  The Michigan CB is a much better player.

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - Phogge - 11-23-2016

Peppers will bulk up and be a better pro at LB.

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - martyup - 11-27-2016

Now he is #1 in total APY.  He did this while missing one full game (ND).

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - Papa John - 11-28-2016

According to http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/individual/20, CMac has 2327 APY with one game left, opponent TBD. His closest competition:

2185, Jeremy McNichols (Boise St.), bowl game vs. TBD
2119, Donnel Pumphrey (San Diego St.), MW Championship Game vs. Wyoming on Saturday, bowl game vs. TBD
2103, D'Onta Foreman (Texas), season probably over
2093, I'Tavius Mathers (Middle Tenn.), bowl game vs. TBD
2046, Dalvin Cook (Florida St.), bowl game vs. TBD
2006, Aaron Jones (UTEP), season over

Comments: If CMac has a "normal" game in the bowl game, it's likely that no one will catch him in total APY. BSU's loss to Air Force knocked them out of the MW Championship Game, effectively dooming Jeremy McNichols's chances. Donnell Pumphrey of SDSU is the only semi-serious threat. FWIW, when SDSU lost at Wyoming during the regular season, Pumphrey had 128 APY.

Mixon might also be on the periphery as he has two games left to play (next week and bowl game), though he has more ground to make up (currently at 1950).

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - bbm233 - 11-28-2016

It's not a particularly great year for APY. If CMac gets to 2500 APY, that won't break the top 30 all time for a season. If he hadn't missed a game and got to say 2750 APY, he would be just outside the top 10 best seasons of all time. It's an interesting list, with a bunch of stars and a bunch of no-names. Barry Sanders and Marcus Allen are the only ones near the top of the list who ever won that H-thingy award.

There are two factors that distort historical APY:

1. Seasons used to be 11 games + a bowl game (potentially), now there are 12 games + a conference championship game (potentially) + a bowl game (potentially). Also, bowl games were previously not included in NCAA season or career statistics.

2. The 2012 change in kickoff rules (kickoffs from the 35 instead of the 30, touchbacks brought out to the 25 instead of the 20) has had a major effect. In 2011 the touchback rate was 15%. Since then it has ranged between 34% and 39% in every season. Obviously kickoff return yardage is a big component of APY and opportunities have been severely depressed following the rule change, although higher rates of scoring have mitigated this somewhat.

So CM's total last year is even more impressive given the reduction of returnable kickoffs, although the raw total is boosted by additional games (on a per game basis he was well behind Barry Sanders' incredible 1988 season).

Like McCaffrey, Mixon has also missed a game. So, right now Mixon is #2 in all purpose yards per game.

Mixon is currently 377 yards behind McCaffrey in total, with one fewer game played. So, that represents a single great, but not quite record, game.

Re: CMAC Is Back on Top - Papa John - 12-06-2016

The all-purpose yards (APY) stats have been updated on the NCAA website:

http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/individual/20

CMac is in front of OU's Joe Mixon by 16.0 APY per game and ahead of Donnell Pumphrey of SDSU by 98 total APY heading into the bowl games!

Way to go, CMac.  This season put into perspective what an amazing achievement last season was for him . . . and what a travesty it was that he didn't win the Voldemort last year.Â
