Interesting article - JohnR34231 - 11-23-2016

On why we are playing Rice over Thanksgiving weekend.

I don't think this has been discussed before; if it has I missed it.

http://www.mercurynews.com/2016/11/22/why-stanfords-playing-rice-in-what-might-be-christian-mccaffreys-last-home-game/

Anyone want to venture a guess on the actual attendance? Somehow I don't think it is going to be SRO.

Re: Interesting article - 2006alum - 11-23-2016

So his dog Fleener IS named after Coby!

The better question, of course, is why we got dealt the option of either a week 2 or last-week bye. The former is only marginally better than the latter...

Re: Interesting article - Bruce Wang - 11-23-2016

If this will be CMac's final home game, I hope he breaks the single game all purpose yards record on Saturday.  Currently at 578 by Emmett White of Utah State (2000).

I think I'd like to go to this game.  I'm in town, 70% chance of rain.  What could be more fun?

I was thinking around 20K. If it is raining drop that to about 10.

Also, as far as CMac breaking records is concerned, I think because of the Rice AD's Stanford connections the dogs are going to get called off pretty early.

well most teams play a non-conference game in week 2 (as well as usually week 1 and often week 3) and a conference game in the last week of the season.  Playing ND in Oct displaces a conference game spot during "conference" season.  If we played ND in week 2 we would have probably had bye in the middle of the season and a conference game this week like everyone else in the conference except USC who is playing ND.

Re: Interesting article - OutsiderFan - 11-23-2016

I don't know what benefit Stanford is getting playing Rice this weekend.  I understand the not wanting 12 weeks straight without a bye week, but I can think of nobody who cares about Stanford playing Rice at the same time all these other games are going on.  Even with the bye, Stanford has suffered injuries, so what difference would it have made to have ended the season already?

On another note, this was the most awful schedule anyone has ever dreamed up.  Stanford had to play KSU, USC, UCLA, Washington, Washington State, ND, and Colorado all in a row.  No team in the country had a schedule with that many legit teams all in a row.  Sure UCLA and ND were down this year, but still, historically they are not below .500 teams, and every one of those teams were or are ranked in the Top 25 this year.

What would have happened if the schedule was:

KSU
U$C
@UCLA
@Arizona
Oregon State
@Oregon
@ND
Colorado
Washington State
@Washington
@ California
Rice

Stanford would have likely started 7-0, probably been better able to withstand the spate of injuries it had, and likely been more confident and healthier when playing the Washingtons.

Re: Interesting article - dabigv13 - 11-23-2016

Burns would probably be the QB still....

Re: Interesting article - Hurlburt88 - 11-23-2016

Probably, but the turnover "problem" would be the gum in the works

Re: Interesting article - needle - 11-23-2016

Even if I could attend in person, I would avoid this game. I won't be watching at all. Stanford football in the current era should not be scheduling a home-and-home with Rice. I would rather see a home-and-home with San Jose State (at least that would cut down on the travel time for players).

Totally agree with you.  I mourn the loss of the SJSU game.

Re: Interesting article - ChicagoCard - 11-23-2016

Didn't SJSU leave Stanford having to scramble to schedule an FCS opponent twice since 2010?

Don't know, don't care.  I really miss the virtual guaranteed win on the schedule.  Helped SJSU too, not as much of a body bag game.  I even went to a game at SJSU stadium and had a legally sold beer there.

Re: Interesting article - CowboyIndian - 11-23-2016

That was San Jose's call....not ours.

Re: Interesting article - fullmetal - 11-23-2016

Tanner Gardner is a senior associate athletic director at Rice.  He's also the chief revenue officer (presumably for the athletic department as well).  Tanner was a c/o '08 standout wrestler for Stanford.

I assume you are being sarcastic, but if not, I will have an extra ticket.  I will be going with my son assuming my flight back from San Diego is not delayed, but I have a family pass which includes two adult and two children.

Besides, what is a little rain compared to the weather forecast in Detroit?

Right, that's what I meant. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I kind of assumed they bailed on the Bill Walsh Game in order to cash in by playing at Wisconsin and at Alabama. Which didn't work out too well for Stanford because it meant having to schedule an FCS opponent. And when you play an FCS opponent, outsiders assume that was your intent.

Re: Interesting article - JJJ - 11-23-2016

I suppose I should know the answer, but I don't. Why is it that the ND game only throws our schedule out of whack when we host them? What part of the arrangement prevents this from happening when we play at South Bend? Sorry, probably a dumb question, but I'm not sure where to turn.  :-[

Re: Interesting article - JeffInCorvallis - 11-23-2016

Because they insist on playing us (and Literature's Famous Losers in the off-years) at the end of the season after Thanksgiving.  If you want to know why they do this and why Stanford does not insist on them hosting us the week after Thanksgiving you only need visit South Bend in November.

Ok, thank you. But I may pass on the South Bend tour.
Maybe the Irish should "host" Stanford in Honolulu after Thanksgiving. Lots of green-clad Manti Teo fans, and ND fans may not mind that they "have to" go to Hawaii every other year. :)
