Ot: fun special teams ending to ravens/bengals game -

Ravens up by 7 with around 15 seconds left punting from their own 20. Instead of punting they tell their blockers to tackle everyone on the Bengals. Flags fly. No one gets near the punter. Time expires. Punter walks out of end zone and takes safety. Game can end on offensive team penalty so game over. Ravens win by 5. Kudos to ex special teams coach and current head coach John Harbaugh.

This sort of reminds me of the game Central Michigan beat Oklahoma State with the untimed down play that technically shouldn't have happened, but I thought it was the right call to make, damn the rules.
I have a problem with a team purposefully breaking the rules and being allowed to win the game by breaking them. In the Ravens' case, the rule should be that the game can't end when committing holding penalties committed on purpose to allow the clock to run when it wouldn't if holding didn't occur; meaning had holding not occurred, the Ravens Punter probably must step out of the end zone with time on the clock, which would have forced the Ravens to kick the ball back to the Bengals.Â

I think without a rule change it could become a bit like WWE. Imagine there was 30 or 45 seconds left and the Ravens are told just to prevent the Bengals from getting to the punter while he runs around. We used to play games like that during recess in grade school but in an NFL game it could get crazy. And I agree it doesnt seem fair.

Seems to me that the obvious solution is that if a team is penalized as time expires in the half or the game, the opponent ought to be able to chose whether to force an untimely down or end the game/half.

An untimely down sounds pretty ominous, it's just a game after all!
