Still in shock. This happened less than two miles from my New Orleans office, just over the parish line in neighboring Jefferson Parish.
Local sheriff released the shooter without charges pending further investigation and the local newspaper forum is adding several comments per minute.
Joe McKnight attended the same high school as Stanford's Terence Alexander and reportedly was working hard to get back into the NFL.
A sad day for New Orleans.

apparently a lot if this witness account is even close to accurate
A witness, who declined to give her name, said she was leaving a store in the area when she saw a man at the intersection yelling at another man, who was trying to apologize. The man who was yelling shot the other man more than once, she said.
She said the shooter shot the man, stood over him and said "I told you don't you f--- with me." Then he fired again, she said.

That is the main question being asked on the local forum at
www.nola.com. Press conference by local sheriff at 1 or 2 pm CST will hopefully provide substantive details.
Sharp contrast between treatment of this shooter and shooter of retired NFL Saint Will Smith earlier this year. That shooter is in jail pending trial.

Doubt the shooter would have been released if he was black.
Even being an NFL star won't protect you.
Cue the "wait for the whole story" and self defense nonsense.

I mean, yeah details, but what an effing travesty of justice to release a guy given the evidence. He's surely a flight risk now. What the hell. Nothing seems right.

McKnight, 28, was out of his car and was "positioned at the passenger window" of Gasser's Infinity when Gasser, seated in the driver's seat, fired three rounds from a .40-caliber weapon through the open passenger window hitting McKnight, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.
...
Witnesses told law enforcement that Gasser and McKnight were involved in a "heated verbal exchange" from their cars. The witnesses then heard a "rapid succession" of gunfire which drew their attention back to the men. At that point they told police they saw Gasser standing behind the vehicles and McKnight lying on the pavement between the Infinity and Audi.
A "civilian" pulled McKnight from between the cars and unsuccessfully attempted to revive him by administering CPR, according to JPSO. This person also told Gasser to secure his weapon in his pants pocket and wait for authorities, which Gasser did, police said.
McKnight suffered a gunshot wound to his hand, a second below his right nipple and a third to his right shoulder which punctured his lung, according to the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office. The third bullet hit more than one organ.
...
Normand said at the press conference that the "stand your ground" law "looms on the horizon" but wouldn't discuss the issue any further.

Joe McKnight's killer apparently had a previous road rage incident at same location in 2006:

Good to see him charged. It would be nice if folks would let the process play out before armchair Law & Ordering.

Crazy world .... we now have to assume that any driver involved in a road rage incident is carrying a loaded gun.

I was taught this when I started driving, don't think it's anything new.
But yes it is crazy.

Yep. Before you get into an altercation with an unfamiliar person, assume they're armed and dangerous. It's what I was taught even as a kid, and so far it's served me well.

Probably the best way to avoid road rage is to not stop. Here's some good advice:

Quote:
1. Appease. Whether it's your fault or not, show some grace and class by giving them a friendly wave (ideally with all five fingers) to acknowledge the situation. Most of the time this works just fine to diffuse the situation.
2. Apologize. If said maniac driver won't let it go, consider offering a sincere apology and yet another wave of the hand. Of course, never get out of your car.
3. Call police. If you sense that the driver is on a downward spiral (e.g., yelling, cursing, threatening), tell the driver you are calling the police.
4. Disengage. If calling the police doesn't get them to stop following or harassing you, stop all communication with them. Roll up the windows, look straight ahead and drive to the nearest police or fire station.

Another one I've heard is to not go home. Go to some public place, such as a library or police department.

I saw this comment on Reddit, in case anyone was wondering about this:
Quote:To everyone asking why it isn't a murder charge: in Louisiana, 2nd degree murder is still premeditated (by premeditation, I mean there's specific intent to kill) murder. So they don't have evidence to prove this was anything more than crime of passion, making it manslaughter by state law. It has nothing to do with manslaughter being easier to get a conviction
