Let's get a thread started for the semifinal match tomorrow (Thursday) at 4 pm pacific.Â

To put yourself in the right mindset for the match, read through this great article on Kelsey Humphreys and the adjustments that she had to make in her role this season.Â I did not realize that Coach Dunning changed from 6-2 to 5-1 in the middle of a match with no advance warning to the players and without practicing it.Â To everyone's credit, they have made it work.Â

By the way, the semifinal matches were moved from ESPN2 to ESPN. On my Comcast DVR, the change wasn't picked up correctly (at least as of last night), so in the 4:00 pm PST slot the program guide shows a high school football game on both ESPN and ESPN2. The football game actually was swapped with volleyball and should be shown only on ESPN2, with volleyball on ESPN.

What a great and well written story on Humphreys. I was happy we moved to 5-1 and thought it was key to our becoming consistent and our success. Now looking back, Humphreys has played an important new role on the court and this story hints at the importance of her role in helping define and strengthen the team, especially with her commitment and sacrifice to team over self.

My two favorite things during the match was her block and in the celebration scrum seeing her cry with joy. On a team of players that show a lot of fire and passion she is generally calm and stoic. But it came out then.

Great motivational picture for tonight. For those too young to know, the picture is of Logan Tom, who played for Stanford at the turn of the century. She holds the Stanford career records for kills per set (3d in total kills) and service aces per set (2d in total aces). I once saw her do a flying dig and then kill the ball from the back row. Very intense stare.

Those are wooden bleachers at floor level, which is what we used to sit on before the age of seat licenses, and back when there was a floor that gave players with good hops REALLY good hops...
