Chryst and Butt injuries -
OutsiderFan - 12-31-2016
Keller Chryst looked to have a more significant knee injury than Jake Butt had yesterday, based on how they walked off the field after going down. Chryst injured his about 6 hours earlier in the day. But it's now being reported that Butt tore his ACL and will need surgery, while Tom Fitzgerald just reported an hour ago that it won't be known if Chryst will need surgery for a few days. Is there any reason Stanford should need a few days to know on Chryst?

Too much swelling to do a proper evaluation. The severity of the tear not quite clear yet. Perhaps the desire to get a second opinion. Other ligaments involved (PCL, MCL, LCL, etc.) Those are the reasons I can develop on the quick. Not hard to believe that his preferred surgeon is not in the office on Dec 31st, and that they will determine the path forward after the holiday weekend.

The way it happened, I think his knee was a time bomb just waiting to explode. All he did was plant his right foot to cut left and boom. There was no twisting or external trauma.

Yeah, that is what they say about those non-contact tears. If not in El Paso in 2016, then maybe on the road at any of the other Pac-12 North stadiums in 2017.
It must be a tough time for him right now, so hope he recovers fully. Sadly, I fear he may become the poster child for the importance of making that 40 year decision.Â

Chryst wasn't going to make it to the pros. It was always a 40 year decision, whether he knew it or not.

That's a bit harsh for somebody who still has two years of eligibility left.

I would think your average #1 Passing QB coming out of HS that is now 6-0 as a college starter probably believes they can at least "make it to" the pros. He may or may not have "made it IN" the pros. However, based on the way NFL teams relentlessly hunt for QBs I am confident a tear-free Chryst gets picked in the first 5 rounds of a future NFL draft. Even with an ACL injury/tear/surgery I can imagine a number of paths that get Chryst into the NFL.
Sure hope he gets back soon.

If Trent Green, Brock, Steve Stenstrom, Husak and Fasani were drafted into the NFL, then it's not hard to believe that Keller Cryst could as well.

On the topic of an NCAA playoff, I originally favored it because there would be a definitive champion. Now I don't like it because it makes all the bowl games seem irrelevant. I would rather eliminate the playoff for football and let everyone argue about how the rankings should look based on unrelated bowl games.Â

I think there are a fair number of people who feel that way, and that's fine.
Just don't hold your breath waiting for it to happen.
It's probably just a matter of time until we go to an eight team playoff. So if you think the non-playoff bowls seem irrelevant now......

And has demonstrated improvement over the course of the season.
Trubisky (projected as a certain first round selection, possibly high first round) completed 54% of his passes for 5 TD and 4 interceptions as a backup during his sophomore year.

I don't see the bowl games as any less relevant, meaning that they were always fairly irrelevant. In the pre-BCS days there were two (perhaps three) teams that had a chance to be voted national champions so the bowl games that they played in were de facto championship games, and the remaining bowls were irrelevant with respect to the national championship. This Sun Bowl game didn't feel materially less relevant to me than the same game twenty years ago, probably the opposite given how the sport has grown.

Not that this is supremely insightful, but Chryst's family walking out of the Sun Bowl stadium had the most somber look on their faces. I almost thought that Geep would have gone down to the locker room during the game...if he did, he came back to the stands.

Wasn't Geep seen on the sideline after Keller was injured?
