Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - Papa John - 01-08-2017

Whoa! That's a surprise. Has it been confirmed?

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - winflop - 01-08-2017

Not confirmed but Feldman's source says Ath Dept got fed up with him interviewing for other jobs after each of the last three season - when clearly he didn't deserve another job.  But I gotta think there's another shoe to drop with the awkward timing.  Season's been over for several weeks and I haven't heard about him interviewing for any jobs since before Christmas.  Violations????

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - gocard14 - 01-08-2017

Here's hoping that Chip Kelly isn't interested.

I can't imagine why he would be though. Cal probably can't meet his price and is a financial disaster. He will have his pick of open jobs if he just takes his time. By this time next year, he could be choosing between Notre Dame, UCLA, A&M, Tennessee, etc.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - winflop - 01-08-2017

Report now confirmed by Kyle Bonagura at ESPN.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - yvonne - 01-08-2017

There's either another shoe about to drop or,this,is the most calLike timing in history.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - JohnR34231 - 01-08-2017

There goes the theory that Kal couldn't afford to fire him.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - French Rage - 01-08-2017

Looks like I gotta retire my "Where The Sonny Don't Shine" sign.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - wallendar - 01-08-2017

Interesting...

I suspect that the Administration has something up their sleeve.  We will find out whether that is the case very soon.

While CoachDykes should be credited for completely turning the academic situation around, he never seemed like a good fit.  UC would be wise to hire a West Coast guy who understands what it takes to recruit this area of the country.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - Hurlburt88 - 01-08-2017

Thinking opportunistically . . . are there a couple of recruits or transfer candidates to look at given the upheaval?

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - yvonne - 01-08-2017

There's lots of speculation that they landed Chip. I find that hard to believe given the budget situation.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - CowboyIndian - 01-08-2017

Maybe they waited until after Jan. 1 to arrive at the annual decrease in Sonny's buyout.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - FarmBoy - 01-08-2017

Worst news of the offseason. Now there's a possibility of Cal becoming a threat in the north. Hopefully the botch the next hire again.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - wallendar - 01-08-2017

Re: Kelly and money...

I don't see this as an issue since he is still being paid by Philadelphia (2 years) and SF (3 years).  He could set up a contract that would start below market rate and end at or above market rate.

Additional information is leaking out...

CoachDykes is rumored to have secured an OC position at an SEC school (Ole Miss?).

UC is expected to have a replacement signed by the end of the week.  This would imply that they had someone lined up before cutting CoachDykes loose.

The AD's statement included a couple of telling comments (paraphrasing):

I want someone committed to the program (in other words, a guy who won't "coach shop" after every season).

I want someone who will energize sagging season ticket sales/renewals (obviously there was more to the drop in interest in the program than just late starting times).

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - winflop - 01-08-2017

Gotta believe there's more to this story than has been stated.  When your athletic department is running a $20M budget deficit and you are looking at cutting multiple sports, you don't add $2M+ to that unless you really had no choice.

As for Kelly, I think that's just crazy speculation.  If Kelly waits 12 months while he collect 2 NFL paychecks, he will be able to pick whatever top-tier college program that's looking for an HC.  Kal is two tiers below that - at least.  It's not even a turnaround situation - it's a salvage situation.

Just because Kelly is being well paid by his former employers doesn't mean he would/will sign a below market deal.  Unless he has some particular affinity for Cal I just don't see why he wouldn't wait for a better opportunity for both football and financial reasons.

Not sure I buy that completely.  I think Chip Kelly is kryptonite in the NFL right now.  He has 49ers stink all over him and Philly player stink, and can't-get-along-with-the-GM stink in both cases.  He's financially secure, for sure.  I don't think top colleges, or even colleges-that-think-they're-still-top-tier (yes, South Bend, I'm looking at you) want to deal with a candidate who has all that stink, plus the one-trick-pony stink.

And c.al needs a name.  They have to overcome that overwhelming deficit, they need wins, they need excitement, they need buzz, they need season ticket holders, they need hope, they need vision.  No one who will follow Sorry can provide that, except...perhaps...Chip.

That's the buyer side.  On the seller side, I actually think Chip thinks Berzerkley could be a good fit for Chip.  Chip has chafed in high-intensity-media situations, at least that's my sense.  So if you're Chip Kelly and you're evaluating Left-of-left football, you might be thinking like this:

Compensation:  n/a.  I will be getting tens of millions from two separate NFL teams, speaking of which:
NFL vs. NCAA:  I've worn out my welcome big time in the NFL, unless I want to report to someone, speaking of which:
Big Boss vs. Sidekick: I'm not going to be at the mercy of any other head coach.  I am the big dog, speaking of which:
Recruiting.  California has a hyoooojjj market for players, not very many of whom wanted to come to Berzerkely and play for Sorry Yikes, but the key to recruiting is:
Quarterbacking and QB tradition.  Yes, the University of one-to-the-west-from-Stanford has an actual QB tradition with recent actual QBs in the NFL.
Administration:  UCB's administration will give me all the rope in the world, but what about the...
Pressure to win?:  Again, N/A.  This is a salvage situation.  There is literally no way to go but up, which the
Large Alumni Base will love, once I bring the #1 rated passing offense back.

So.  It could happen.

Adding to the total speculation, they may have waited to fire Yikes because they have some actions that they can say are firing for cause. No $2M+ involved in that case. The strange timing could be related to that. I almost can't believe it could be that they worked out a deal with Kelley in just a week. That is pretty quick, UNLESS there was some previous discussions. If there were, the plot really thickens.

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - Mick - 01-08-2017

Max Meyer of NFL.com mentions one name and one name only in his Sorry Yikes Fired article: Chip Kelly.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000771427/article/cal-fires-head-coach-sonny-dykes-after-four-seasons

CBS says maybe Chip Kelly
http://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/report-cal-fires-coach-sonny-dykes-could-chip-kelly-become-a-target/

The Comical's Kroichick and Saracevic says Chip is too expensive:
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000771427/article/cal-fires-head-coach-sonny-dykes-after-four-seasons

Craig Stevenson says Chip is the one:

I wonder if "repeated looking for another job" comes under "fired for cause."

ESPN refuses to speculate:
http://www.espn.com/col

I think Wilner thinks he was fired for cause
http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/01/08/report-cal-fired-sonny-dykes/

Supposedly he is receiving a $6 million buyout:

Re: BREAKING: Sorry Yikes fired - Phogge - 01-08-2017

Can he recruit defensive guys? Anybody with a temperature can get into Oregon.

Much smarter to hire a defensive coach.

When will Lance get a chance?
