WVB: John Dunning retires - fullmetal - 01-09-2017

After 16 years of coaching at Stanford, he goes out on top, having won a national championship, and leaves the cupboard full of talent for next season.  Thanks for everything, Coach Dunning!

Re: WVB: John Dunning retires - BobK - 01-09-2017

Very upsetting but congrats to John.    Wow sad.

So our Banquet will be his farewell.

Wow.  Sad news.  I wish him the best!  To those who know... had this been planned for some time?

Darn.  He will be missed.  With a great young team coming back hope they get the right person to coach them.

Re: WVB: John Dunning retires - 81alum - 01-09-2017

He seemed very emotional after the championship, I wonder if he knew then that he was finishing.  But what a way to go.  I came late to watching volleyball and it is thanks to him.  I somehow feel cheated that I did not follow his teams all along.

Re: WVB: John Dunning retires - needle - 01-09-2017

I know very little about volleyball, but Dunning's record speaks for itself: .828 winning percentage, five national titles and his teams never missed the post-season.

Thanks for the memories, coach!

John Dunning is my favorite coach at Stanford. He has built a really special program that is reflected in the special people the players are, the closeness of their relationships with each other and the coaching staff, and the way he develops them.

Their banquet is my favorite. If you have a chance to attend - highly recommend.

Has he groomed a successor?

National search announced, so I'm guessing no.

Re: WVB: John Dunning retires - M T - 01-10-2017

I've never met him, but he seems a gentle soul.  Obviously he was able to draw great athletes & keep them in the program.  I presume that he was also a great teacher.  His players, Stanford, we fans, & WVB will all remember him fondly.

I'm not sure his exact age, but I'm sure there are a number of us that are in the same range.  Just hours ago, I was thinking of what I might do if I decided to retire.  I have a great job & am appreciated, but, still, there are other things I might never do if I don't make room for them now.  I could see making a quick decision to step aside when you're at the top.

Re: WVB: John Dunning retires - BobK - 01-10-2017

Denise Corlett maybe the top assistant in the country.  Voted that or top recruiter many times.    But she was our head coach post Shaw pre Dunning and didn't like the role and has said so.  She could have bernhead coach many places and choose to stay.  Cassidy Litchman is in her first year of coaching

MT: I read somewhere that Dunning is 65.

Lots of quotes from lots of people in story by Lee Feinswog at a site called Volleyballmag.com.

http://volleyballmag.com/dunning-retires/

Quote:So there was a lot to catch up on when they gathered in Palo Alto on Monday afternoon for the first team meeting of 2017.

And the coach for the past 16 years at Stanford told his staff and players, “We’re going to add new recruits to our team, there are people who are not going to be with our team, and I’m not going to be with our team, either.”

He had to pause while recounting the moment.

“Then it was really hard. I’m an emotional person but I’d like to be a little more in control than I was, but I didn’t do a good job of that today,” Dunning said Monday with a laugh.

“I really like the people who were sitting in the room with me today. It was really, really hard and now I’ve got to deal with what’s next. We’ll see what happens when I wake up tomorrow.”

I don't follow that statement.  Does it mean another member of the coaching staff will be leaving?  I heard Corlett will be around for a transition period at a minimum.  Who else will not be with the team?

Well, for one Inky exhausted her eligibility.  Humphries too if memory serves.

Graduating seniors, e.g. Inky.

Thanks, Needle. That is a fantastic article.  I encourage everyone to read.  There are some wonderful testimonials from friends in the profession and players from his Stanford teams.  You'll feel even better about Coach Dunning as a person after reading the stories about him.  I was interested to learn that he was a high school math teacher before he became a coach.

Yes, the back story is that he was a math teacher at a high school in Sunnyvale (he was my brother's math teacher, and they still play golf occasionally), and was asked to start the girls volleyball team. Not only was he new to volleyball, so were the girls, so he started coaching club volleyball including developing young girls (probably started the club, I think). Ended up winning the high school state championship I believe. Then wife laid down the law: you can't be coaching volleyball full time and teaching math full time, you have to choose one or the other. The rest is history.

Very interesting.  I think John Dunning's first year, he coached Eileen Dempster at UOP, a team that finished 36-3.  Eileen Dempster now Eileen Howard, mother of Brittany Howard, Stanford VB player.

Also at UOP in 1985, Dunning took over from Taras "Terry" Liskevych, who just retired from Oregon State as their Women's volleyball coach.
