Today in Opponent Coaching Addition - DC 86 - 01-16-2017

Cal hired Beau Baldwin as its new OC, he was the HC at Eastern Washington where he coached Vernon Adams and installed a high powered offense that was very successful. Obviously an important hire given that Wilcox is a defensive coach.

Over the past four seasons EW was 2-2 against Pac-12 teams and scored at least 42 points in each game.

Yikes ran a pretty good offense at Louisiana Tech too.  How'd that work out?

But a terrible defense, winflop.  OTOH, Baldwin won a national championship at EWU.

Well, if Dykes had been hired as OC under a strong defensive minded HC it might have worked out.

Baldwin is the best coordinator Cal has ever hired, IMO.  EWU has had some prolific offenses.  Wilcox is putting together a great coaching staff.  Now all eyes are on who the DC is.  It actually looks like Cal's administration has suddenly decided to actually care about winning.

Yikes offense wasn't any great shakes other than during one year with Goff.  I'm just saying that running a great offense at a lower level does not automatically translate into doing so in the big leagues.  Probably about as good a hire as the Weenies could get/afford but I'm not quaking in my boots at all.

Please.  Art Briles was a high school coach before lighting it up in the NCAA.  Go look up what EWU has scored against Pac-12 teams the last few seasons.  And they did that with FCS talent.  Trust me, Baldwin is going to make Cal a potent offense.

Re: Today in Opponent Coaching Addition - oldalum - 01-16-2017

EWU scored 45 points against Wash. State this year, just about 29 more than we scored against them.

This may be interesting on a couple levels. True, Baldwin ran the EWU offense for the Adams years, but most recently his OC was Troy Taylor, the former Folsom CA HS coach who developed UWs Browning - who put up ungodly numbers in HS. Taylor has just been hired as Utah's new OC, with a mandate to bring that prolific offensive scheme to the Utes. This has me more worried than da Bears; unless Baldwin has now incorporated a bunch of the Taylor offense into his working portfolio. In which case, we will certainly need to get more than 2 defensive players into the class of 2017.

Re: Today in Opponent Coaching Addition - washingtonismoney - 01-17-2017

Baldwin seems like a good hire to me. Obviously almost all hires are at some level pretty uncertain,* but Baldwin looks like he is a very plausible candidate.

*(some candidates of course are "slam dunks" -- your Harbaughs and Urbans -- but then the expectations are proportionately ratcheted up.)

Re: Further Opponent Coaching Addition - unclechuck - 01-17-2017

Reports out that Wilcox has also hired Steve Greatwood as OLine coach. Head of UO line thru the Bellotti, Kelly & Helfrich years, he was most recently assistant HC and head of running game. Very highly regarded for player development and zone blocking expertise, which should mesh well with Baldwin's open offense. Greatwood was also an excellent recruiter with focus on Pac NW and California. I suspect he will be even more directly competitive with us operating out of northern Telegraph Ave.

I guess it could be worse; he could have joined Mora.

Re: Today in Opponent Coaching Addition - fullmetal - 01-17-2017

Ouch, poor Willie Taggart, getting his staff cut out from under him--assuming he was planning to retain Greatwood(?).  But hey, Taggart is coaching the enemy now as well.  And I'm not sure it's better or worse that a good opposing coach moves from one rival to another.

Re: Today in Opponent Coaching Addition - wallendar - 01-17-2017

Greatwood was fired along with the rest of the UO staff.

Wilcox will return the UC recruiting focus to the west.  That is a major change from the previous regime's emphasis on TX and the southeast.  It should pay big dividends for them.
