Coming to Stanford from Illinois.

looks like a good hire.  looking at his Illini bio, the recruiting part captured my eye (an up arrow) and his trend year-to-year too (not necessarily an up arrow).

I don't follow Volleyball closely, and this isn't a criticism.  I assume Stanford hired the coach we thought most likely to bring success.  But, I do have a question.

Why didn't we hire a woman to be the women's volleyball coach?  I assume that most women's volleyball coaches are men, and that could be the answer right there.  If so, why is it that most women's volleyball coaches are men?

With basketball, it makes more sense to me since the sport is more popular with boys.  But the opposite seems true for volleyball.

There has been a fair amount of discussion out there that one of the curious, unintended consequences of Title IX is that as the prestige and pay for coaching women's teams has risen, there are far more male coaches of NCAA women's teams. Presumably this reflects a loss of opportunities for women; though since the total number of women's teams has greatly increased, it may not be an absolute loss of positions.

It's easy to google lots of articles on the topic. Most of them tend to focus on basketball, as that is the highest profile women's sport.

Here is a report out of the University of Minnesota on the matter, unfortunately several years old now (2012-13 season).
http://www.cehd.umn.edu/tuckercenter/library/docs/research/2012-13_Decline-of-Women-College-Coaches-Report_Dec-18.pdf
It looks like at that time, 40% of NCAA women's volleyball teams had a female head coach, 60% of basketball teams. (see chart bottom of p.6)

Stanford, by the way, comes in at a C in their grading system, with 40.9% female head coaches. (See Table 3 on p. 15)

Re: New WVB coach - Kevin Hambly - paloalto - 01-30-2017

Fantastic.  Plenty young enough that 2019 and 2020 recruits don't have to worry about him retiring.

Now, coach Hambly get out there and reassure Dunning's recruits that there will be no surprises for them.

There may be a little humor in Stanford's AC Jason leaving Stanford for Illinois and now Hambly is coming here from Illinois.

Re: New WVB coach - Kevin Hambly - BobK - 01-30-2017

I'm a season ticket holder and recruiting nut.  I don't know Hambly but a friend has coached with him and is a Stanford WBB grad who thinks a fine hire.
Must keep Denise
New coaches never I say NEVER understand recruiting st Stanford.  Reaffirmed last week by another coach.  Having Denise means recruiting success.
We signed 2 for the next class and have no openings as of this moment.  We will have 2 openings for 2018 and have 2 great prospects with brobdingnagian Stanford leans.

Yes it's very sad more women aren't given a chance.  Yes there is discrimination in America.

Number one recruiting target is Hayley Hodson

Re: New WVB coach - Kevin Hambly - paloalto - 01-30-2017

I don't get what you mean Hodson is #1 recruiting target.  Is she considering not coming back?  She is on the beach roster.

Hambly on leaving the players he recruited:

“The kids I committed to be here for, that’s gutting. I love them. I truly love them like they were my own daughters. It’s going to be hard to see them from afar and if we were to play them that would be really difficult.”

Re: New WVB coach - Kevin Hambly - BobK - 01-30-2017

The real beach roster hasn't been posted and Hodson plans to return for Spring Qtr.  If this isn't Hambly's # 1 priority I can't imagine what is.
