Caleb Phillips - LB/TE from Santa Fe Christian (San Diego, CA)...? - Strid340 - 02-02-2017

No sign of him in any of Stanford's official signing day media, but he (and the San Diego Union-Tribune) says he received an offer and committed.

Anybody?

Re: Caleb Phillips - LB/TE from Santa Fe Christian (San Diego, CA)...? - Mick - 02-02-2017

My guess is he's a kid who got into Stanford and wants to try out for the team.  On the surface of it, his statistics wouldn't even support a walk-on status, not as a 6'5", 195 pound, 4.67 40 TE/MLB combination.  He made 47 catches over the past two years, averaging 26 yards per reception.  Looks like he led his team in tackles or close to it, but honestly, he looks like a really good high school player (Defensive PoY in his league) who, in all likelihood, would probably ride the pine in the Ivies.

no offer from Stanford.  Phillips will be a walk-on.  per one of the recruiting sites, he had offers from Navy, BYU, Wyoming, Nevada, Army, Harvard, Yale and Princeton.  probably not just a pine rider in the Ivies.

110 tackles his SR year, 2 INTs with 1 returned for a TD.

named 1st team all San Diego.  looks like a good walk-on candidate.

The wording in the SD Union-Tribune article, about a "scholarship offer" and Stanford offering "a free ride" is weird to me - don't walk-ons just have the opportunity for a free ride (and only after their junior year, IIRC)?

I know at least one former recruited walk-on whose family repeatedly referred to their financial aid as a scholarship.  Stanford is very generous.  Might be that.

His recruiting profile lists him as a 195 pound tight end.  The worst team in the Ivies this year was the Columbia Lions.  They have seven tight ends on their roster.  Six of the eight are between 245 and 255 pounds, the seventh is 235 pounds, the eighth is 225 pounds.  Neither of those former two played much.  Phillips would have to gain 50 pounds to reach the average weight of the tight ends of the worst Ivy League team.

You pointed out he was all conference.  The starter at Columbia was all-conference for three years and all-state in Arkansas his senior year.  He outweighs Phillips by 55 pounds and is an inch shorter.  Phillips is running a 4.7 at 6'5" and less than 200 pounds, that's very lean.  Add 50 pounds, and does he break 5.5?  My guess is no.

To me, his profile reads no better than 4th string in the Ivies and a real possibility of getting badly hurt on Stanford's team.

Makes sense, non-athletic aid/scholie

I'd imagine there's a pretty fine line to be walked there.  A "recruited walk on" getting a non athletic scholarship sounds like great way to get around the NCAA total.  Or try to anyway.

Re: Caleb Phillips - LB/TE from Santa Fe Christian (San Diego, CA)...? - qwerty49 - 02-02-2017

Santa Fe Christian is a very small school -- their high school enrollment is only about 450 total.  So a 195-lb TE is not a fish out of water in that context.

They are extremely competitive in Girls Volleyball -- this past year they beat big local powerhouses Cathedral (Gaffney's alma mater) and Torrey Pines (home of John Lynch, Chad Hutchinson).  They used to be D-4 or D-5 in CIF, but this year in the CIF playoffs they were in the Open Division and beat both Long Beach Poly and Mater Dei before succumbing in the round of 8 to eventual champion Santa Margarita (which I think is KJ Costello's alma mater).  Pretty impressive showing for such a small school.

Uh, do we have any confirmation that this is real, outside of this one SD Union-Tribune article?  Just want to make sure we're not getting catfished here.

Neither Rivals nor Scout had Stanford listed in Caleb Phillips' interest list.

Re: Caleb Phillips - LB/TE from Santa Fe Christian (San Diego, CA)...? - kuz - 02-02-2017

He did not receive an offer. He's a walk on.

Re: Caleb Phillips - LB/TE from Santa Fe Christian (San Diego, CA)...? - BobK - 02-02-2017

A walk on only and just accepted. And committed

Re: Caleb Phillips - LB/TE from Santa Fe Christian (San Diego, CA)...? - BostonCard - 02-02-2017

I believe the only restriction is that he not get any money that wouldn't be available to a non-athlete.

Remember, Stanford has income thresholds for tuition and tuition + room/board.  So, if he falls below those thresholds he can get a his tuition waved, just like any other student.

So for a student athlete who receives the tuition waiver due to the income threshold, does that count against the scholarship limit of their specific sport?

Re: Caleb Phillips - LB/TE from Santa Fe Christian (San Diego, CA)...? - BostonCard - 02-02-2017

I believe non-recruited walk ons only start counting when they play in a game.  The requirements for recruited walk-ons are a bit different.

Then why would BYU offer a scholarship? They must see serious potential in this kid. Also, it's very possible that this Phillips could gain 50 good pounds and maintain his current speed or better. I weighed 165 pounds and ran a 5.1 40 my senior year in HS. Three years later I weighed 218 and clocked 4.78.

Couple of thoughts:

First, how did you run a 5.1 40 as a 165 pounder?  I ran track in high school, and I remember guys running at that speed, our weight guys and our pole vaulter.  Did you go from non-athlete to serious athlete?  And your 4.78 as a 218 pounder...this guy would be 30+ pounds heavier.

Second, he was at the very bottom of the list for BYU, based upon the 57 offers they made this year.  Yes, 57.  They offered 20 four stars, 22 three stars and they lumped Caleb in with the remaining as "no-star" offers.  All of this per BYUinsider.

Third, you improved by .32.  I don't see a regular high school, three-years-on-the-varsity athlete, at 6'5", 195 pounds running a 4.67. turning into a 4.32 after gaining 55 pounds.

Finally...he regressed considerably between his junior and senior years.  Ivy.  Pine Rider.

It's a little more complicated than that.

If I have this straight, any "recruited walk on" who receives any financial aid from the school becomes a counter the moment they appear in any game.

A "recruited walk on" means that the coach contacts the athlete off campus, the athlete takes an official visit, and maybe a couple of other things.

There may be some updates, but I think that is basically the rule.
Coaches often go to great lengths to ... encourage an athlete without recruiting them.
The term preferred walkon, that I have seen Stanford and others use, has no meaning to the NCAA as far as I know.

Now someone who knows better can come in and correct me.

Re: Caleb Phillips - LB/TE from Santa Fe Christian (San Diego, CA)...? - BigEasyCard - 02-02-2017

Apparently Caleb Phillips has turned down opportunities where he has a better chance to play and could also get a great education in favor of walking on at Stanford.  I welcome him and hope that his experience on the Farm exceeds his expectations.  It's a 50-year decision for all college-bound high school seniors, regardless of their prospects for playing time.

Geaux Cardinal!

Re: Caleb Phillips - LB/TE from Santa Fe Christian (San Diego, CA)...? - slide - 02-03-2017

I agree with you BigEasyCard.

on comparisons, Phillips reminds me a bit of a thinner, but faster Louis Vecchio.  as some may recall, Vecchio was a walk-on candidate at Stanford in '14.  he was admitted but chose to go to Penn.  his HS stats on D weren't as good as Phillips, but he looks to have blossomed at Penn.  Vecchio was all Ivy League this year.
