NFL - Stanford vs. Ivies -
BigEasyCard - 02-04-2017
This site lists NFL players by college:
http://www.espn.com/nfl/college/_/letter/s
Not sure about the criteria for inclusion. In any event, Stanford has 31 players listed including Brennan Scarlett. The Ivies collectively have 18 as follow:
2Â Brown
1Â Columbia
2Â Cornell
1Â Dartmouth
8Â Harvard
1Â Penn
3Â Princeton
0Â Yale (Perhaps this helps explain why Harvard has beaten Yale 9 of the last 10 meetings.)
Geaux Cardinal!

Ask Brian Dowling and Calvin Hill. All they could manage was a tie against Harvard, which didn't have any future pros on their team in that game. Harvard beat Yale, 29-29.Â

Great documentary on that game, "Harvard Beats Yale 29-29", featuring Tommy Lee Jones, offensive guard for Harvard:

Yale - When I was applying to colleges back in the 20th century, I applied to Yale as well as Stanford. I was a pretty good WR in my home state of New Mexico. That's equivalent to being a pretty good cowboy in Maine. I had no illusions about being a competitive athlete at the D1 level. Ivy - maybe.
I got a nice hand written note from the legendary Yale Football coach, Carmen Cozza. "I hope you will come to Yale and play for us."
I chose Stanford. So I played on the JV squad at Stanford. This was before freshman could play on varsity. On that JV team we had (I think) 8 men who went on to play pro ball. Two were first rounders, James Lofton and Gordy King.
I survived that season with only one concussion. Spent the night at the student health center. The concussion made me forget every class I was taking. Late November and I didn't remember what classes I was taking or what I had learned. I called my room mate and asked him what books were on my book shelf to see if that make me remember. All I remember is asking, "Meteorology, why would anyone take that course?"
Next day everything was back and I knew that I was completely out of my league.
The next week I bluffed my way into playing in the last game against Cal. "Doctors say I am good to go." In reality I had never consulted the doctors at the student health center after I was released. I caught 1 pass. I was in the books.
Ivy's get superior academic and respectable athletes. Stanford gets superior academic and superior athletes. That's a pretty hard screen to pass through. That is why the current recruiting class is so exceptional.

Good story, Threepointer. And sobering. Glad that you came through with no lasting effects.

Speaking of Brennan Scarlett, if he ever started and they did one of those televised introductions, I wonder what school he would claim. He had a better career in his one year at Stanford than in his four across the Bay, but something tells me he'd say C.al. If so, I'd understand.

One of the traditions I have experienced from attending games at Michigan is the announcement of the Slippery Rock football score. Apparently this started in 1959:
https://www.michigandaily.com/sports/10-legend-slippery-rock-12
"It was an afterthought the first time it happened in 1959, but it has become a Michigan Stadium tradition. Each game, the public address announcer reveals the score of the Slippery Rock game as he announces scores from around the country. And most times, it draws the biggest reaction of all."

I don't know if Michigan stole it from us or vice-versa, but Stanford was announcing the Slippery Rock score at least as far back as 1966, my freshman year. Any older folks who remember it earlier?
