Football Depth Chart - Cap Heresy - 02-04-2017

I have published my first crack at the 2017 depth chart. Comments welcome, especially:

Left-Right in the defensive units
Possible impact redshirt freshmen
Opinions on 2017 class redshirting

Re: Football Depth Chart - HarbaughBuiltStanfordFB - 02-04-2017

I have trouble seeing Scarlett demoted to 4th string even after a very underwhelming year. My guess is Scarlett will get extensive action in goal line/3rd and 1 situation, therefore Lund will most likely be redshirted

From what I seen and heard, Little will likely be placed in LT and Sarell will likely be place as RT.

Stanford will likely reshirt majority of their 17 class players (after we don't have any early enrolls):
Connor Wedington - Most likely to play as a true freshman, will be fuse into the Team like McCaffrey and Love
Lund - 90% redshirt, Scarlett will be given another year to fill his role as a goal line back
Parkinson - 90% redshirt, not needed with Kaden Smith and Scooter ready this year
Osiris St. Brown - This is a tough one, I think he should be redshirted but then I think about how we lost 2 WRs and Irwin played as a true freshman, he might step into as like the 4th in the depth chart
Sarell/Little - My guess is whoever 1 is better at run blocking will play in the ogre/run heavy formation and the other 1 will be redshirted. To me, AT Hall and Casey Tucker were the worst starting players for us last year so the coaching staff should heavily consider replacing them, I doubt the Shaw will (given his love for returning starters) but if anyone will be replace then the job will likely go to the 2 RS freshman rather than Sarell/Little. I think there is a slight chance Sarell start as RG this year.
Wade-Perry/Johnson - Our DL depth is depleted as always so they might play as frosh especially if injury bug starts to hit us. Wade-Perry more likely to play than Johnson, we don't have a true NT
Stuart Head - 95% redshirt, no reason for him to play as true freshman, secondary depth is great
Adebo - 95% redshirt, no reason for him to play as true freshman, secondary depth (especially CB) is great

Questions:
Why is Clark Yarbrough so behind in the depth chart? Is he behind schedule in his development (compared to Hamilton)?
Is Curtis Robinson a RS Freshman or True Soph? I saw him play last year but I am unfamiliar to the redshirt rules

Re: Football Depth Chart - Cap Heresy - 02-04-2017

Good input. I'm 100% sure Sarell will be LT and Little RT. Robinson played some special teams, so he should be a SO. The redshirts I have little-to-no info about were placed alphabetically, so sorry Clark! That's where I need the most help.

By the way, what's with all the extra security just to post?

The extra security questions will go away after 10(?) or so posts. I believe it's designed to keep away bots and bad guys. Welcome to the 'board.

Note: I've never personally seen either Little or Sarell, live.  So, if you have seen them, perhaps you have a better grasp of their abilities than I do.  But, based on what I have read, Sarell struggled a bit against speed rushers at his all-star game, while Little just dominated, including a reported dominance of Jaelen Phillips, the top edge rusher in this recruiting class. Players develop over time, or course, but if this report was accurate, I would think Little at LT.  Also, Sarell played some snaps at LG in the game.  Not saying he moves there permanently, but if he does have some issues with elite speed rushers, a move to guard would make great use of all his power, without exposing him to the speed.  Perhaps another DeCastro?

Re: Football Depth Chart - Cap Heresy - 02-04-2017

I didn't hear that about Sarell. Hard to imagine the #1 or #2 player in the nation would struggle at anything. Almost all scouts I've read have him at LT, with the supposed footwork and wingspan to be an Anthony Munoz. One thing that favors RT (or either G) is his ability to set himself up for the second level block. Nice problem for Shaw to have.

Re: Football Depth Chart - rudruff - 02-04-2017

I think we may see both of them at more than one position. A brobdingnagian part of Shaw's message to OLineman is about teaching the techniques used in the NFL instead of the spread.

While it might be difficult for them to be day one starters, I think the Ogre packages are more about getting new lineman into game situations. I think it is far more likely they both wind up there and push the starters until they know enough to take someone's job.

Re: Football Depth Chart - Hurlburt88 - 02-04-2017

I wonder if someone will pass Alameen Murphy as #3 corner.  He has a lot of experience but seems too much contain and not enough playmaking.  Thoughts?

Re: Football Depth Chart - OutsiderFan - 02-05-2017

That depth chart seems off to me.

The OL in particular looks questionable.  If Walker Little doesn't start at LT, something is wrong with the program.  The #1 overall recruit in the country starts, period.  But more important than that, Stanford has no legit LT returning. And I would imagine Devery Hamilton or Foster Sarell is a much better RT option than Tucker, who I think should move to Guard, in part because if he has any NFL future it is at Guard, not Tackle.  But he could also be beat out by Fanaika or even Bright or Wilson at what should be the heavily contested RG position.

Don't know why Trevor Speights is being pushed so far down the order.  Admittedly, I have heard nothing about him from practice observations, but he sure looked good on his high school videos.

I will bet my entire net worth that Donald Stewart will be playing before IBS and Krishnamurthy at WR.

The TE order looks right to me, but we need to keep in mind both Smith and Parkinson are fully capable of splitting out as WRs.

The defense seems to be a lot more reasonable to me, but man are there lots of questions on the DL. Here's what we do know:  Phillips is a starter, but is he really a NT?  He might be better at DE.  Jackson's production was poor as a RS Frosh.  Just 11 tackles and 0 sacks in 13 games, but he is probably still getting bigger, and high be better with a year under his belt.  Eric Cotton was a backup with almost zero production.  Then you have Michael Williams (who is almost certainly better than Cotton), Bo Peek, Jovan Swann, and Thomas Schaffer, who all redshirted and are unknowns.  Then DWP and Ryan Johnson as True Frosh, who might be the most talented DL on the roster when they arrive in June. It's possible Annan makes a jump, but when I saw him in Spring last March he didn't look like a guy who is going to do much at this level.

The Linebackers seem about right, though I am going to assume Okereke and Barton are the starters until they aren't.  Also think it's possible Robinson pushes his way up the depth chart at OLB.

As for the DBs, I would suggest Buncom is the #3 CB, and that Andrew Pryts is going to make a move to be in the rotation at Safety.  Absolutely loved the Pryts on video in high school.

Re: Football Depth Chart - Durty Nelly - 02-05-2017

I do not think Baily will handle field goals, kick offs and punts.

Likely, Beall or Toner will handle field goals.

I moved Stewart up.

First of all, somebody should welcome Cap Heresy and HBSFB to the board.
There used to be an "Introductions" thread pinned at the top where people introduced themselves - and it seemed a very nice feature for building community. That's gone now, but you can introduce yourself anyways if you would like.

The WR list shows that while we may or may not have an ILB depth issue looming for the future, we have a WR issue now.
That is why I would think the most likely true frosh to play is St. Brown. Our WRs don't catch a lot of balls, but we do use a fair number. We run four and even five-wide sets. While those typically include a nominal TE or two, we'd still be scraping the bench to get the set on the field without St. Brown.

I wouldn't put Tyler (who has at least seen the field) or Segina behind two walk-ons who have never set foot upon the field in a game, though at that point in the list it may not matter.

Re: Football Depth Chart - Cap Heresy - 02-06-2017

I know who the new walk-ons are, but didn't know the former walk-ons. I will probably fix that up.

By way of introduction, I am retired from the Info Tech industry, mostly as a database consultant (think big mainframes). I live in Cincinnati. I became a Stanford football fan after they upset Ohio St in the 1971 Rose Bowl. I lived in Ohio then, also, but for some reason geography has rarely mattered in the teams I favored (Vikings, Pirates, DC United). Stanford football is my favorite team in ANY sport at any level.

For college, I was accepted to both UNC and Stanford, but in both cases didn't get the scholarship I needed (too expensive otherwise). I ended up at Ohio U. My other connection to Stanford is my uncle, William Perry, a cabinet member under Clinton. You can wiki him if interested.

I have a college football website for preseason predictions. It is currently off-line, but the url is https://sites.google.com/site/capheresy/ . See my track record here http://preseason.stassen.com/prediction-accuracy/ and here http://preseason.stassen.com/

Re: Football Depth Chart - CornFed - 02-06-2017

Welcome CH.  We have a game prediction thread here too, but I suppose you will have to disqualify yourself if you're a professional.  :P

Re: Football Depth Chart - BostonCard - 02-06-2017

No need to google Bill Perry.  I remember while I was an undergraduate he came to have a dinner event at one of the dorms and we had to be "taught" proper protocol.  I remember him as being very affable.

One of our regular posters was Sam Nunn's chief of staff, and probably interacted a fair bit with your uncle in that capacity.
