Stanford offense has weapons, but also much work ahead of it - stupac2 - 02-08-2017

Lombardi's take on where we are heading into spring: http://www.espn.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/108381/stanford-offense-has-weapons-but-also-much-work-ahead-of-it

I don't think there's much new in there for any of us, though I was unaware that Shaw had said that Chryst is going to be the starter in fall, that seems wildly premature given that he might not even be healthy.

When I read Shaw's quotes on Chryst it seemed a lot more hedged than Lombardi's paraphrase. That's not to knock Lombardi, who has taken the literal meaning fairly; it's just that when you hear Shaw talk about it, it sounds a lot more indefinite than the summary would indicate.

Wilner has some actual quotations from Shaw on the matter, probably from the same press conference. There is a lot more nuance in there.

Lombardi is probably taking some literary license and inserting his opinion to conclude he believes Chryst will start, based on what he has seen in the past.  However...

It would be very poor form for Shaw to basically be telling Costello (and even Burns and Mills), that they have no chance to start at QB in 2017.  Though I will admit he came awful close to saying there is no competition in his remarks last week.

Quote:Quarterback recruiting is very personal — not for me but for our program. They have to be what we’re looking for. It starts with character, with the right guy.

Things that make you go hmmmm.  Was he referring to someone in specific?

Now that you mention it, hmmmmmmm.

(And I am reminded of this song. Spoiler alert: 90s dance tune!)

I was reading this just as a compliment for Mills providing these attributes. Don't think Shaw is the type to make unnecessary digs especially regarding players.

But of course you could read into this a reason for not offering some otherwise very talented and highly rated prospects. We already suspected as much...

So Chryst is the starter should he be healthy. If not, Costello and Burns will "compete" though Costello likely has the edge. That was my takeaway.
