Stanford hanging tough against Arizona at McHale - Leftcoast - 02-08-2017

Men's basketball is down by just 3 with 4:30 left in the second half.  Reid Travis is having a strong inside game against the lighter Wildcat big men and the Card zone defense is surprisingly tough on the road. An upset would be big - Arizona has a 64-1 streak going at home.

It's on FS1 if you want to tune in for the final minutes.

Stanford tied the game at 67 with two minutes to go but from there Arizona scored the final 7 points to pull out the 74-67 win.

Reid Travis strength at the post and a scrappy Stanford zone D kept the game close but the lack of an outside shooting game was the difference.  Stanford shot 4-17 from long range.

Very entertaining game.  Stanford played with passion and intelligence in a very challenging environment against a team that has great deal more talent.  Would have loved to see the winning effort rewarded with a win, but I'm proud of way they played.

One of my main criticisms of Dawkins was that we overall did worse against conference opponents the second time around each season, which I thought was attributable to being outcoached by better coaches. Haase's first repeat conference performance, though just one game, is at least encouraging. FWIW, Sean Miller in his press conference was extremely complimentary of Haase's coaching and the improvement in the team since the first game. Now let's see if we can beat ASU

If this team can deliver the kinds of performance we saw against Utah & last night and avoid one like Colorado, I see 6th place as a stretch but possible and certainly an NIT bid which I would consider a success in Haase's first season given the roster he has to work with.  I think even 7th would get an NIT bid and we're only a half-game behind the Cougs there - who play @ Utah next.

Finally watched the DVR of the game and man, was I impressed! Despite the final outcome, I felt much better for the exercise, playing in a hostile environment against a ranked team and clawing back despite repeated runs by the home team. Allen had himself a heck of a game (he even shot 50% from trey-land! ok, 1 for 2) and should continue to be used as a slasher, Travis was a beast, and I thought the coaches did a great job of preparing the team. I'm actually looking forward to watching the rest of the season!  8)
