MBB: ASU 75, Stanford 69 -
JJJ - 02-12-2017
Belatedly watched the DVR. I guess I kind of understand why there was no recap of this, because it hurts more than the UofA loss. After a fast-paced, entertaining first half which ended about even when their 3-pt shooting cooled off, we were actually in the lead for a large segment of the second half (for the game, we led for 27:52 to their 7:59 according to the box score), which was a slower-paced, more "plodding" pace (per Don McLean). We were up 9 with 9 minutes to go, up 8 with 8 minutes to go, then due to shooting into the "curtain of distraction" (2H FT 4-11), we let them tie it up. Even then, we regained the lead and were actually up 1 to 3 with about a minute to go. But we threw the ball away twice, once on a pressured entry pass, and once as we were trying to fly down the court after ASU went up by a couple. Marcus Allen couldn't find the handle on the last one (as well as another breakaway earlier in the game), putting a damper on his career high scoring night (20pts). Yes, we were only playing for conference tourney seedings, but a road split would've been nice...

I saw the UofA loss as inspiring because it was a sign of how well this team can play to be tied with a top 25 team on the road with under 2 mins to play. Yesterday was the other end of the spectrum.
At this point I accept that this team is highly inconsistent. Two of its last four game have been really, really good (Utah, Arizona) and two of them have been really, really bad (Colorado, Arizona St). It explains why this team is right around .500 and probably why it won't make the NIT unless it can put together more good games than bad ones down the stretch and finish 7th in the conference. I don't see them cracking the top half at this point. Too many games behind and too few left to play.
NOW GO BEAT THE WEENIES ON FRIDAY NIGHT!!!

One good thing about the season.
So far, anyway, no players have elected to sit out because they consider the rest of the games "meaningless". :)

I watched the second half of the game. I thought we played reasonably well and I was entertained. It was a real shame that we let the lead ebb away, but I will leave it to those who follow and understand the team to put this in more context.

Maybe Haase can learn a few tricks from Shaw about calling plays with a two-possession lead... :P

Ouch! Pretty strong reaction for an off-hand joke accompanied by a smiley. Take a deep breath and move on next time.

Played OK until Humphrey went out with his fourth foul and about 6 mins to go. Nobody on ASU could stop him, but after that they kinda fell apart. Offense ground to a halt, they gave ASU too many open looks outside, and had some awful turnovers down the stretch.
Humphrey is great, but he gets in foul trouble too often

JPRI, at no time did Christian ever label that game "meaningless." Meaningless was the designation that some of us fans gave it, but it's very unfair to imply that Christian deemed it so.

Whoa, I guess my joke really hit a nerve with some of the denizens of this board.
I'll be more careful next time.

JPRI,
I don't want to take this too far, but the word was in quotes, there was a smiley face, and I thought the joke/gibe was funny and a bit incisive. If anyone marks your rep down (if you care) I'll be happy to give you a +1.

Joke all you like, just don't falsely attribute a quote to somebody that makes him look like a jerk. Now if you had said, "I'm glad nobody sat out the games to prepare for their pro careers," it would have been fine, and possibly funnier.

Thanks for the positive reinforcement; glad someone thought it was funny.
For those who found it offensive, sorry about that. It wasn't intended to be.

Regardless of pro-con re Mac I think a lot of old athletes around here were mystified by the kid's decision.
I'd still love to see him in Silver and Black next season. He's perfect for their offense.
