One of the sanest P10 expansion views I\'ve read - Redrum - 05-11-2010

Mainly because it\'s from the perspective OUTSIDE of the Pac-10 and not ginned up by the Pac\'s attendant, dependent cloud of bloggers and media types.  Finally, someone makes the case from the prospective joining teams\' perspective.    And it takes a swipe at  Texas having to travel to backwaters like Eugene and...Seattle. (snicker)  The author probably doesn\'t  even know there\'s a place called Pullman.

Anyway,  a better view of expansion than anything I\'ve seen from the Pac-10 hangers-on,  maybe because it\'s talking about bring BIG dawgs into the conference.  Most of the expansion opinions previous to this concentrated on squinting really hard to try to make adding Utah and BYU seem like it made sense.

Another problem .... the whole premise is built around the Big 10 not wanting Texas and Texas A&M because they\'re too scared to play the Texas schools and only want the Big 12\'s current patsies.

There are three things wrong with Burka\'s premise.   It\'s Texas provincial reasoning at its finest, refutes his "all about the money" theme and even if you accept his reasoning current patsies don\'t stay patsies forever - particularly when they are named Oklahoma and Nebraska.

Provincial is really the only term you can use for a guy who thinks UT fans would have a tough time getting to Seattle.  Alaska has daily non-stops to Austin!

Now Eugene\'s a whole different story.  Probably involve going through Denver or SLC.

Alaska, of all airlines, took over the SJC-AUS route that American used to fly, the old "nerd bird" flight.  I have no idea what kind of economics forced AA to drop that flight :(

It\'s not the money per se, more their self percept - Redrum - 05-12-2010

They view themselves as special. Unique.  Keepers of Knute Rockne and Fr. Hesburgh\'s flame.  With a distinct mission and distinct role.  The fate worse than death would be some sort of perceived equality between ND and Indiana or Mich. St.  Just another midwest regional school instead of a national school.

So, maybe we now know the price of vanity, and it runs about $7 million  a year.

Notre Dame may not make as much in TV revenue as the Big 10 but if they make a BCS game, they don\'t have to share it with anyone.
