WVB - the story of the National Championship season - Spiny_Norman - 02-27-2017

The Cardinal Channel was embedded with the WVB team this fall to record the story of their season.  The result is a 20 minute video that is well worth your time.

Re: WVB - the story of the National Championship season - paloalto - 03-26-2017

I have watched that video at least a dozen times.

Vanjak is not on the 2017 roster.  I know she graduates in June but I thought she would play as a grad student and get a Masters degree paid for.  That opens up a scholarship for 2017?  Can Hambly bring in an elite recruit this late?  Bobbk, can you shed light?

Re: WVB - the story of the National Championship season - BobK - 03-26-2017

It's too late.  Maybe a transfer ?  They could play right away but all the top 50 recruits are signed

Vanjak probably off to Grad school.  Maybe back to Germany.

Jenna Gray is still playing beach volleyball.  Is she also throwing javelin for the track team?  I don't know how a student can participate in two varsity sports at the same time without there being scheduling conflicts.  She must have some kind of agreement with both coaches that she will participate part time in each sport.

Re: WVB - the story of the National Championship season - fullmetal - 03-30-2017

Are individual student-athletes participating simultaneously in two, in-season varsity sports subject to a 20-hr/wk rule on an individual basis?

Re: WVB - the story of the National Championship season - BobK - 03-30-2017

Great question for Candice Wiggins.  😀

Re: WVB - the story of the National Championship season - paloalto - 03-30-2017

Well, it looks like Gray is scheduled to participate in the javelin throw tomorrow, Friday, at 11:00 am.

from track and field roster:  re Jenna Gray

•A three-sport athlete at Stanford, playing indoor volleyball in the fall and beach volleyball in the spring while also competing in track and field

Re: WVB - the story of the National Championship season - BobK - 03-30-2017

Thus my question about 3 sport athletes on the past 60 years

Re: WVB - the story of the National Championship season - 81alum - 03-30-2017

That was a beautiful video.  Made me misty eyed.  But I guess I'm just getting sentimental in my old age.

Re: WVB - the story of the National Championship season - oldalum - 03-30-2017

great video, but I wish they had included the story of how Kelsey responded to the mid-season change from 2 to 1 setter; that was an inspiring story: without her total dedication to the team we would not have won the natty.

Didn't Folkl play both volleyball and basketball at the same time (overlapping seasons)?  As I recall, she only practiced in volleyball but was good enough to show up in basketball games and be a force, even though Vanderveer made her come off the bench.

BC--

She was the best player on the floor by the end of the season in 1997.  Starbird had a better overall season, but in the last 8-10 games, Folkl was dominant.  One big reason for losing to ODU in the national semifinals was her fouling out on a sequence of calls that really showed the refs being (1) too slow - they were almost always trailing the play, and (2) disbelieving that a woman could be that athletic (her fouls were on blocks that were like McCall's at the end of Notre Dame, but in the open court).  On her fifth foul, watching the replay, no part of her came within 3 inches of touching the other player, except her hand blocking the ball away.

Folkl fouling out, along with the referees' "let them play" attitude toward an extremely physical Old Dominion side. (I will always remember Machinguana landing on Jamila Wideman as she was attempting a tying three and no foul being called.)  Those were the big reasons for that heart-breaking loss, when we did have by far the better team.

Absolutely correct, VG.

I turned away from that game disgusted.  Not because Stanford lost, not because the refs got critical calls wrong but because a far inferior team that played ugly basketball was awarded a game they didn't deserve.

Gray 159-10 just missing her PR.    Probably enoughto qualify for the regional

Just an idle thought Bob (...but hey, it's Friday, right?)  Anyhow, it's pretty danged windy out today on campus - do you think she would've hit a PR in calm(er) conditions?

Re: WVB - the story of the National Championship season - BobK - 03-31-2017

On the track for the short races strongest wind was 5 mps.  But big time cross  wind.    The winner also Stanford right at her PR so hard to tell

Re: WVB - the story of the National Championship season - paloalto - 03-31-2017

Stanford’s MacKenzie Little is in first place with a throw of 182 feet.  Gray is in fourth place with 159'10".  Third place is slightly over 160' so Gray is doing better than I expected.

I read where Gray didn't start throwing  javelin until she was a junior in high school and her technique is far from traditional.  She probably has a big upside potential if she focused exclusively on javelin.

Agree with your take.  I watched that game in Sun Valley, ID on a ski vacation during spring break (interestingly, I also watched the Rhode Island game that sent the men's team to the final four the following year while skiing in Tahoe (I had graduated by then, though).  But yeah, it felt like we should have won it all that year.
