WSwim national championship meet preview -
Spiny_Norman - 03-12-2017
Women's swimming national meet begins on Wednesday in Indianapolis and runs through Saturday.Â
gostanford has posted a preview. See the bottom of the preview for day by day and event by event schedule for Stanford swimmers -
http://www.gostanford.com/news/2017/3/12/womens-swimming-diving-ncaas-await.aspx
Some notes:
Stanford women's swimming has not won a NC in this century. Last championship - 1998.
Stanford swimmers have the fastest times in 10 of 13 individual events and 4 of 5 relays. Between Simone Manuel and Katie Ledecky, Stanford has the top time in every freestyle event.
Go Stanford!

Although ESPN sometimes is a bit spotty in their coverage when they are broadcasting the meet live, much of it can be watched via live streaming, as found on this link:
https://swimswam.com/links-need-2017-womens-d1-ncaa-championships/
A lot of love from Swimswam for Stanford, as seen in their predicted outcomes. One of the comments reflected exactly what I was thinking -- "A lot of Stanford." I expect a fall off from such near-perfection (how could there not be, especially when races are often decided by hundredths of seconds), but Stanford is obviously the overwhelming favorite.
But enough of the predicted accolades, which runs the risk of devaluing the actual outcome, assuming they are true. And if they're not....ooof.
Time for the actual races.

Maybe interesting for the prognosticators out there:
SwimSwam has a
Pick-Em (via Google) contest for the NCAA Women's swimming.
Entries due by 1PM Pacific Daylight on Wednesday.
If you're so inclined, here are the
seeding times
and
here you can research each swimmer's times through their career. Unfortunately, there's no good way to see the similar info on coaches.
The prize is nominal (T-shirt & magazine subscription).
As far as their posted predictions go, I'm surprised they called Katie for the 200 Fr. While Simone might not beat her, I think it is too close to call.Â

Thanks for the great info. I saw Greg over the weekend and he seemed relaxed and ready. He's really done a fantastic job with this team. I know expectations are high, but I think he has the team ready to exceed expectations. Here's to a great meet for the Cardinal women!

Congratulations to Simone Manuel, Lia Neal, Ella Easton, and Katie Ledecky for their NCAA champion winning, NCAA record and American record breaking 800m freestyle relay, 6:45:91!

That's an amazing swim at 6:45.91, breaking the record they set at Pac-12s by a full 3.5 seconds. The prior record before this year was the C.al relay in 2015 with Cierra Runge and Missy Franklin, who swam a 6:50.18.
Well done!

Fantastic swim and a great start

Great news.
Just for fun I checked out the men's NCAA 800 relay time from 1967, and with three Olympians they swam 6:54.65. I know it is 50 years ago, but it does show how swimming has changed over that period.

Quote:Stanford absolutely destroyed the NCAA and American Record tonight, bringing it down with a dominant 6:45.91. Simone Manuel led them off in 48.57/1:41.41, followed by teammates Lia Neal (49.05/1:42.15), Ella Eastin (49.52/1:41.89), and Katie Ledecky (48.97/1:40.46).
While Ledeckys 1:40.46 anchor split was well ahead of anyone in the heat, the fastest split of the night came from Louisvilles Mallory Comerford, who threw down a 48.59/1:40.21 on the 2nd leg in heat 2.
Based on today's swims, it appears that Katie would likely beat Simone by a few tenths in the 200.
I find it interesting to compare today's times to the race in the PAC-12s, to get an idea of how the taper has worked.
PAC-12 results:
Quote:800 Free Relay
(wow, those are very fast exchanges! I'd say too fast for a 800 relay that you know you're going to win.)
Neal, Lia SRÂ Â Â Â r:+0.69Â 24.07 50.02 1:16.68 1:43.34
Drabot, Katie FR r:0.15Â 2:07.08 2:33.44 2:59.86 3:26.77Â Â (50.10Â 1:43.43)
Eastin, Ella SOÂ Â r:0.07Â 3:50.68 4:16.68 4:42.86 5:09.14Â Â (49.91Â 1:42.37)
Ledecky, Katie FRÂ r:0.06Â 5:32.16 5:57.56 6:23.59 6:49.42Â (48.42 1:40.28)
200 Free
Manuel, Simone SOÂ r:+0.68 23.05 48.28 1:13.93 1:40.37
So, Lia Neal improved by about roughly 0.75 seconds (1:43.43 -0.69 = 1:42.74 vs 1:42.15 - 0.15(estimated))
Ella Eastin improved by about 0.5 seconds.
Katie slowed down by 0.18 seconds (likely part of that is a safer start).
It is worrisome is that Simone was a full second slower than her individual swim three weeks ago (0.3 on the first 50, 0.7 on the second).
The 200 Free will be a VERY interesting race.

and Comerford would beat them both! She was a lot faster than her best NCAA flat start 200 free time of 1:41.70. I'd say Comerford has thrown down the gauntlet.

Ooooh. C.al just DQed in the 400 Medley relay, after finishing first. And guess who was 2nd? That's a 46 point swing.
My goodness.

CardFan--
They announced the DQ during the video review that happens after every final ("Lane 4 has been disqualified.")Â Swimswam says it was on the exchange from fly (leg 3) to free (leg 4).
