Kal lays an egg - winflop - 03-15-2017

Wow Ivan Rabb makes McCaffrey look like a saint - claiming a foot injury to not put his pro career at risk in a meaningless postseason game.

B.earInsider hasn't gone apoplectic yet but people are pretty much saying "don't let the door hit you on the way out" if Martin gets another offer despite winning 21 games this season and going 10-8 in one of the toughest Pac-12s in recent memory.

I do hope Bird is OK. Concussions suck.

a commenter says that Rabb found out (was diagnosed with?) around 11a/noon that it was plantar fasciitis.

In other news, water is wet.

Re: Kal lays an egg - Leftcoast - 03-15-2017

Multiple media sources are saying that Cal basketball coach Cuonzo Martin has accepted the Missouri offer.

Re: Kal lays an egg - Papa John - 03-15-2017

Makes sense. Columbia, MO is close to Cuonzo's home territory, and I imagine he'll have success recruiting the Midwest, which he knows very well.

But the men's basketball situation at Cal is a mess right now. I would think that the AD is going to have a difficult search.

Re: Kal lays an egg - winflop - 03-15-2017

Wow Cuonzo we barely knew ya.

Weenie MBB is quickly heading down the same path as Weenie football.  Mediocre at best and stuck in the middle.  Too hard academically for many of the players they want, and less attractive than Stanford and others (Northwestern, Duke, etc) for players who can handle the academics.

Re: Kal lays an egg - Papa John - 03-15-2017

You bring up a good point, winflop. But I think that another major problem for Cal basketball and football goes beyond attracting the best players. They also need to attract the right coaches, and Dykes and Martin--who both saw a good deal of success elsewhere--really struggled in Cal's environment. I would think that the AD will want someone who "gets" Cal and has demonstrated success as a coach, but that list must be pretty short.

Re: Kal lays an egg - washingtonismoney - 03-15-2017

Hmmmm two coaches now spent most of their tenure wanting to leave. Dunno what it is about those 59ers, man.*

*(Look Stanford coaches leave too. But generally it is for very prestigious jobs.)

I think this is a bit of a vicious spiral. The players they want don't come, so the coaches they want don't come either. Then the coach they get can't recruit the players they want, so the coach looks for another job after 2-3 years of futility.

But let's not look at our program as all well & good. Stanford is still a stepping stone job, but that's one notch higher than Weenieville. I have no expectations that Haase will stay long-term. If he is successful a major program will come calling with big bucks that we can't possibly match. Wouldn't surprise me to one day see him take over for Bill Self, but he'd probably have to go be successful somewhere else first.

I, too, wouldn't be surprised if Haase did really well and moved on (although I'd much prefer if he did really well and stayed, a la Tara). It seems a Stanford alum would feel more inclined to stay for the long term, if successful (Shaw, Marquess). Don't we have someone that fits that profile in hoops?

Or perhaps Jaron Collins?

Re: Kal lays an egg - wallendar - 03-15-2017

PapaJohn is right on the mark.  UC needs to hire men who are familiar with the Berkeley culture.  Wilcox was a strong hire.  Now Williams needs to find another guy who understands what it takes to succeed there.  Dennis Gates has come up as a possible choice.  He is a UC grad who is currently on the Florida State staff.  He has a solid reputation in the college hoops world.

Crean fired so Alford to Indiana?

I have often mused about the differing fates of our football and basketball programs, including the longevity of our head coaches.

Most of the time, Stanford has been much more a football school than basketball school. Stanford has also generally had more coaching stability in basketball than football. Those are two sets of facts that I cannot tell if they are correlated, anti-correlated or simply unrelated.

The longest Stanford has ever had a football coach is nine years. Warner and Ralston both managed that. Willingham comes in next at 7 seasons. Most of our coaches have either been successful and moved elsewhere (Ralston, Green, Walsh I,  Willingham, Harbaugh), been unsuccessful and fired relatively quickly (Wlat, Teevens, Elway, Wiggin, Curtice), or left under somewhat ambiguous circumstances (Dowhower, Shaughnessy).

In baketball we had Dallmar for 21 seasons, Montgomery for 18, Everett Dean for 11, and lately and somewhat notoriously Dawkins for 8. Even the hapless Dick DiBiaso stuck around for 7.  Not a lot of guys have won and moved to better jobs, though this is partly because not a lot of guys have won. Davis did get out as soon as he could - but the winning was marginal. Montgomery left for the pros, but 18 seasons was a pretty good run. Trent Johnson sort of did, but that may have had an assist from Bowlsby.

I have no idea what Haase thinks of Stanford long term, and probably Haase doesn't really know either. I think our recent developments in football have shown that if successful, Stanford will pay a coach a competitive salary if not top of the line.  If Haase does plan to return to Kansas, then he has a lot more winning to do first and that would leave us in a better situation than we sit in now.

Apropos nothing, UW fired Lorenzo Romar.

Monty to the Dubs was definitely a step up.  Johnson to LSU more of a lateral move - our program was pretty strong then and LSU wasn't as great as it was in the Shaq era.

Haase moving up is predicated on success, but I think we need to remember that this program isn't close to what it once was in terms of desire/prestige. I'll be surprised if Haase is still here in 5 years but I hope he leaves because he has brought back a little bile & bite to Maples and had at least a couple 23+ win seasons.

On the plus side, Wilcox was a UCBerkeley assistant for 3 years. So he has some knowledge of C.al, though that was more than a decade ago (2003-05). He also has knowledge of the Pac-12, having coached at Washington and U-S-C recently (2012-15).

On the negative side, Wilcox seems to have a track record of changing jobs frequently. His history suggests that if he has one or two good years, he could pull a Cuonzo and leave. And he never has been a head coach, so that's an unknown.

It will be interesting to see how this goes.

I hope he stays.  I'd like to see Cal develop a program with a strong coach.

Ugh, you're getting soft Mick ;)  Need to include the Stanford-always-beats-kal disclaimer there...
