Starting this fall, Utah will start giving partial scholarships to student-e-athletes to compete in League of Legends.

I had to check if the article was published on April 1.

I'm not opposed to Stanford joining novel forms of competition, but it seems odd to connect this to athletics. Maybe there should be a dept to prepare students for other forms of non-athletic competition like math olympiads, building solar cars, chess, and video games.

Additionally, there are many forms of student athletic competition that the university athletic department sees fit not to sponsor at a varsity level (scholarships)--table tennis, quidditch, triathlon, rugby, equestrian, men's lacrosse...et al.

I've heard of another university offering scholarships for e-sports, but that was through the communications/media studies department.  Indeed, the Utah scholarships are being offered through their computer game design program (Entertainment Arts and Engineering Master Games Studio).

As much Starcraft as I used to play, I don't see e-sports as a positive force in society.  Neutral at best  :-\

While Stanford and Cal were tussling in the rain at Memorial Stadium on Saturday [Nov 19, 2016], another battle between the two schools raged down the road in a much more surprising setting.

In front of a crowd of a few thousand people at Oracle Arena and nearly 40,000 more watching online, Stanford defeated Cal in a League of Legends “Big Game show match” during the Intel Extreme Masters, one of the top competitive gaming events in the nation.
