"We should be the Stanford of the East" - AtlantaBadger - 04-06-2017

Now THIS is something I did not think I'd ever hear/read.  I have lived in Georgia for more than 30 years and my youngest daughter is graduating from UGA in a month, so I have heard enough "SEC rules" BS over the years to make my head explode.

Thought y'all would enjoy at least the following quote in this article:  https://www.dawgnation.com/football/dawgnation/georgia-athletics-state-of-malaise    It quotes an Athens resident and UGA fan lamenting the Dawgs' overall mediocre performance across the athletic spectrum; here is the money quote:

“The amount of talent in this state, we should be great every year,” Fortson said. “We have the resources and money in this state. We should be the Stanford of the East. We are a sleeping giant and we just are not reaching our potential.”

Imagine that!  SEC folks wishing they had Stanford's athletic prowess!

If Mark Richt had a completely healthy team for a couple of seasons at UGA before he was shown the door, he might have been able to save his job there.  Unfortunately, injuries happen :(

UGA should turn in much better overall athletics performance.  Of course, so too should the University of California.  In other words, it could be worse, Georgia!

If there was a school that was going to be the Stanford of the East from The Peach State, it would be Georgia Tech.

Wait, I thought Harvard was the Stanford of the East. Back in my day, the Stanford Bookstore actually sold t-shirts proclaiming that very fact.

So we're talking Stanford of the South, right?

I nominate Rice as Stanford of the South.  There's a large sign on the Rice campus commemorating their baseball national championship win over Stanford in 2003.

I'd been at Georgia Tech for maybe 5-6 weeks my freshman year and already knew I was going to apply to transfer to Stanford when I found out President Pettit had been the former dean of the school of engineering at Stanford.  I headed over to his office and set up an appointment to talk with him about Stanford and GT, my vague recollection of the chat was he was engaging and appeared to be interested in why I wanted to leave after such a short time.  In hindsight I'm somewhat surprised I got to chat with him.

Funny, but I don't think of Texas as the South, but rather the Southwest. Maybe because of the former conference and current airline?

But if we go by the U.S. Census Bureau, then Texas is in the South. William Marsh Rice University fits the bill as a private school, too, so that helps. I suppose that Vanderbilt would be a candidate for Stanford of the South as well.
