Off any rational topic there is. Music to pull nails by. - jacketree - 04-09-2017

Mrs. Jacketree watches all those HGTV shows; mostly for the beefcake Property Brothers I suspect, but she sees stuff besides guys who can carry off that three-day growth without looking like an old lech (yours truly).  Stuff like......barn doors!!  Gotta have one, and well, I haven't cut the tip off my finger in a while, so I have marching orders. A trip out to HMB and some sticks from an 1880s barn from Pescadero strapped to the top of the car later, once the rain let up I'm busy pulling all of those historic shards of 130-year old iron out of the amazingly cool reclaimed redwood (with the giant circular kerf marks well preserved) so that I don't destroy my own sawmill running them through.

My own thoughts being terrible company, I spooled some music through the streamer from Youtube to pass the time out on the deck; which also needs replacement, but one jointer-shredding project at a time.

The Beatles never get old.  Apparently this was recorded at Harrison's pad in 1968 on his 4-track Ampex.  A lot of the songs eventually made the White Album, one of them eventually became a Lennon staple, and some I've never heard before. If you like the Fab Four, particularly in their last two years together, this might be worth your time, nails or otherwise.

This post really does have it all. Thank you.

I got introduced to the Beatles in junior high school, starting with their early years - the stuff for baby ears.  I went looking at the record store for a greatest hits album and bought "The Beatles" figuring it was a compilation.  Mind blown.

There's a Beatles-themed bar in Tokyo named the Cavern Club.  They have a terrific Beatles cover band and they took requests.  I wrote down "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on the slip of paper and gave it to the waiter.  I wanted to see if the guitarist could pull off the Clapton solo.  Whenever people tell me the Japanese won't say "No", I tell them this story.

Are you sure it wasn't out of respect??  ;D

Most blues guitarists in Austin demur any requests for Stevie Ray Vaughan covers while in Austin for that reason.

Funny, I saw the subject line and thought "music that makes you want to pull your nails out"

The Beatles first came to America when I was 9 or 10. I wouldn't trade growing up with the Fabs for anything. My sister and I would put on lip-sync shows for our parents, brooms now guitars and pillows now drums. My best friend and I had the first crisis of conscience in our lives when we briefly held sway on the sacrilege that maybe the Dave Clark Five was better. My sister accidentally broke the Beatles 2nd album, and I pouted until Mom bought a new one. My Dad learned all the songs on his guitar. The Beatles remain my all-time favorite (followed by Billy Joel, Zeppelin, and Jack White).

I'm with you all the way on all three musicians.  I don't know if you've seen "It Might Get Loud," but it's Jimmy Page, Jack White and The Edge (U2) doing a little postdoctoral work on the guitar.  It's fun to watch these three pick up the best songs of the others almost instantly.  Here's a clip to whet your appetite:

Here's Jack White, showing them how to do Seven Nation Army:

I think I saw part of that. When I say Jack, I mean ALL Jack - White Stripes, Raconteurs, Dead Weather, solo. What a genius.

I've been to the Cavern Club, but for my money, the real jewel was the Bauhaus, not far way in Roppongi, which played covers from '70s, '80s, '90s, and '00s and in the pre-internet days, was the safe haven for expats looking for a taste of home ("my 'haus away from home"). While the video below is old, and some musicians have moved on (Masato, the younger guitarist, since went to Berklee and is now gigging in Boston), the venue is still going strong. Tell'em JJJ sent you, and you might get a free drink (or a hefty surcharge on the music fee, who knows?).

Oh I wish this thread surfaced before Xmas.  I was in Roppongi for the holidays.  Would have gone to Bauhaus and requested Van Halen's Eruption.
