Solly Thomas on ESPN -
fullmetal - 04-11-2017
Caught a few minutes of ESPN2 programming tonight--
First, an aside: Mitch Trubisky on Gruden's QB Camp sounded pretty dull. I caught the last few minutes of this segment, and it sounded like Trubisky could only offer one word through the film session. "Predator" the way it was explained (not quite the way it seems via internet research) is a 4-3 look where a DL drops into coverage while a LB rushes (weak outside LB, if the internet is to be believed). Apparently Stanford had that look a few times in the Sun Bowl, as Gruden showed some film in the segment. Mitch definitely didn't seem as relaxed as Andrew Luck.
ESPN has a series called "Hey Rookie: Welcome to the NFL" that chronicles a group of players preparing for the NFL draft. Solomon Thomas is one of the featured presumptive draftees in a group that includes JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Connor, Mitch Trubisky, and Jamal Adams. In the episode that aired, Solomon Thomas was shown having his legs shaved at his training center and packing his bags in preparation for the trip to Indy. Apparently he still has a white boxers given to him by his sister, festooned with hearts. There were also game film clips of Solly dominating in the Sun Bowl, as well as some interview clips. The big kicker was the introduction of the episode, where the graphic overlay introduced him as being from "Standford." Seriously ESPN?

Thanks for the heads up; just set my DVR for Hey Rookie. I thought I saw the espn sportscenter guys saying the Browns may possibly take Trubisky rather than Myles Garrett with the first pick. ???

I saw a clip with Mariucci interviewing Trubisky. Trubisky told Mariucci that he hadn't taken a snap from under center since sixth grade.

That is something I wouldn't admit publicly if I were a QB trying to be drafted first...!

Reading that made me wonder what he'll score on the Wonderlick

After his segment on the QB camp, I think he might be the kind of guy to just guess 'C' on every question in a multiple choice exam...mostly kidding. He said nice things about Solomon Thomas after the Sun Bowl, when Thomas came up to congratulate Trubisky on a fairly good game.

Solly is now No. 2, per Walter Camp, going to the Niners.:

Oh Yeah. CMac is No. 8, going to the Panthers.
Re: Solly Thomas on ESPN -

Whaaaat. Would be amazing for Stanford...!
Re: Solly Thomas on ESPN -

So what's the over/under for the game where CMac throws a TD pass to Cam Newton?
And what are the odds that Solly breaks up the play when the Panthers play the Niners in one of the last games of their 2017 season?
Re: Solly Thomas on ESPN -

Newton and CMAC on the same team would be an offensive monster. Having CMAC would make Newton so much more dangerous than he already is. Just shovel passes and screen passes alone to CMAC would totally handcuff the defense, forgetting about everything else that he can do. However, the Panthers have so many defensive issues that the may not be able to justify using their first round pick on offense. So, we shall see.

And terrible for Solly. The revolving door at GM. HC & DC will continue until the Dorks sell the team.

Well, we know that isn't entirely true because we all watched this play.

Which further lends support to the idea that this was called as a crazy, trick play lateral to the left tackle.

Perhaps. But a good defensive lineman is always going to make his bones no matter how poorly the team fares. A QB on the other hand...not so much.

It helps to have a good secondary.

Hopefully he can get the best of both worlds: make some money and win some games.

So this is a weekly series, every Tuesday. I happened to catch yesterday's episode. Not too much to report, but I have set the series to be DVR-ed.
Re: Solly Thomas on ESPN -
JJJ - 04-27-2017
Just watched yesterday's episode, which featured Solly quite a bit from his Pro Day--what a beast! The last bit was an exchange between him and Shaw about seeing each other in Philly. Shaw called it a good decision, once-in-a-lifetime event and Solly said when he got the call, he couldn't say no.
And I'm happy to report that they corrected the graphic from "STANDFORD" to "STANFORD" (something I couldn't say for the prior episodes). Last job for the ESPN graphic guy before they fired him too? :'(
Re: Solly Thomas on ESPN -
fullmetal - 04-27-2017
I saw it yesterday--they did indeed fix the Stanford spelling in the opening graphics.
Solly is *explosive*...I can't even imagine accelerating myself that quickly. That's some fine-tuned neuromuscular conditioning. Also, re: convo with Shaw, I wonder how much of this is staged. Surely Shaw and Thomas have talked over this subject before.
Juju Smith-Schuster let the world know that his favorite highlight in the Coliseum came against Stanford ::)
Also, I'm surprised to see so many pundits predicting Thomas at #2 to the Niners and CMac at #8 to the Panthers. I guess people are starting to drink the Stanford kool-aid...
