MLB Draft -
DC 86 - 06-13-2017
Four drafted in the first ten rounds:
Quinn Brodey (3rd round - Mets)
Colton Hock (4th round - Marlins)
Matt Winaker (5th round - Mets)
Brett Hanewich (9th round - Angels)
Interestingly, Tristan Beck was not selected in the first ten rounds. There had been speculation that he had a pre-draft deal in place since he didn't pitch this year and declined to work out for teams. He had been linked with Atlanta in the second round. Perhaps his medicals scared teams away and he will return to school to re-establish his value. It seems unlikely that he would sign if drafted tomorrow since bonuses for rounds 11+ are capped at $100k.
Recruit Michael Mercado was selected in the second round (40th overall) by Tampa; the allotted bonus for that spot is $1.7 million.

Beck not drafted was shocking as he was 2nd round on valid mock draftsÂ

So do we think Mercado will ever make it to the farm?Â

My reading of the quotations in this article is that it's not likely.

My guess, without any knowledge, is that this indicates either that Beck's injury is much worse than we have heard or he has indicated to teams he is planning to return to Stanford ... or both.

My understanding is that teams usually have a pretty good sense of signability if they're going to draft someone fairly high. Some guys make clear that they're going to college no matter what, but if a kid is going in the first two rounds, the team must have a decent sense of what it will take to sign him.Â
My Minnesota Twins drafted a prep pitcher bound for LSU in the third round that had scared teams off with his salary demands, but it looks like they had a pre-draft deal penciled in place if he fell to them at a certain spot. He was seen as a late first round pick that wanted early first money in order to back off his commitment from LSU, though what he'll end up getting from the Twins is below that, so this could be a situation where the kid legitimately scared teams off with concerns about signing him, and he recalibrated his demands after he didn't go in the first or the second rounds.Â
(Interestingly, the Twins made it work by selecting guys in the first and second rounds that they would be likely to sign below slot, so they could use that savings to pay the third round guy. Entirely possible the third rounder is the highest-paid Twins draft pick. Since you can't trade MLB draft picks, this seems like the equivalent of trading back in the NFL draft. And all of those conversations with agents happen before the draft, so the team knows how much they'll have to work with for other picks.)

I didn't realize Appel had so many injury-related setbacks in his career already. That's rough.

Actually 11 drafted - Jacob Hoffman was selected by Oakland in the 40th round.
He was on the roster but didn't see action for Stanford, but has done data analytics work for the As, so I assume he was drafted by the front office in recognition of those contributions even though he won't be signed as a player.

gostanford.com says Beck plans to return for his junior year and play with his younger brother!
Quote:Tristan Beck
29th Round Pick #872 New York YankeesÂ
Beck, who was a draft-eligible sophomore, missed the 2017 campaign due to injury, but was a first team freshman All-America and All-Pac-12 selection in 2016. The right-hander was just the third Stanford freshman to start on Opening Day, and led all Stanford starters in ERA (2.48) and strikeouts (76). He was also second on the team with six wins and 83.1 innings pitched.
Beck is expected to return for his junior season in 2018, where his younger brother, Brendan, will join the team as a freshman.Â

Great news on Beck. Strange that Baseball America had him 2nd round. Now he needs his back to be healthy.
