Will Kelly be Coaching ND Football in 2018? - Papa John - 06-23-2017

Not talking about Brian, but....

Chip!

According to Daniel Lewis at http://www.sportsline.com/insiders/25806825/odds-for-chip-kellys-future-revealed/?ttag=SL17_os_247_circ_0910, odds have been placed that CK will return to college football after his current in-studio stint at ESPN. And apparently N.otre D.ame is the most likely destination.

Lewis lists other possible landing spots for CK: UCLA, Arizona State, Arizona, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Auburn, Mississippi and California. Really, C.al?

Barring death, illness, or unforeseen scandal, Justin Wilcox will be coaching UCB football in 2018.  Moreover, I don't see Kelly meshing with UCB's academic restrictions anyway.

UCLA could be a real possibility.  Mora on hot seat, CK looking for job.  Would think Chip would like the L.A. recruiting advantage.

Re: Will Kelly be Coaching ND Football in 2018? - fullmetal - 06-23-2017

Chip will do fine at any football factory...more so if the factory has no admissions standards.  South Benders say they have admissions standards, and they might have enough of them to put a speedbump in Chip's path to resurgence.

UC needs a roster upgrade to compete. How many players could start at SU? Maybe Downs at LB and the gigantic fullback.

Pretty sure Demetris Robertson would start at Stanford.

Re: Will Kelly be Coaching ND Football in 2018? - Farm93 - 06-23-2017

I don't think the players on any current roster would be a big factor for C. Kelly.  He likely would want to go to a university that would look exciting to the type of talent he needs for his system to work.  He would also need a university that loves football and is ready to worship a head coach.  He would want a university eager and ready to host College Game Day.  And he would need a university ready, willing and able to pay $4+ million per year.

That doesn't describe UCB, but a few other schools on that list probably would be viable.

UCB will not be winning a coach recruiting battle any time soon as most of the Power 5 schools would be able to outbid UCB.  Most schools would also win on cost of living and outside endorsement opportunities too.    Some things are cyclical in sports, but right now UCB has a lot going against it if you are a coach looking for a big payday over the next 2-5 years.

Re: Will Kelly be Coaching ND Football in 2018? - fullmetal - 06-23-2017

UCB can't afford any kind of payday give the dire straits in which the AD budget is trapped.

Re: Will Kelly be Coaching ND Football in 2018? - Snorlax94 - 06-23-2017

Agree with what farm93 said about a good fit being someplace that would look exciting to the talent he'd want to recruit, which is why I think a Chip Kelly/UCLA combo would be scary.

Those SoCal schools have that Hollywood glamour to some kids.

I don't know if they could afford hin.

I hated when Stanford played against him. I'd like to see him go to the SEC and cause trouble there.

Re: Will Kelly be Coaching ND Football in 2018? - winflop - 06-24-2017

I say bring him back to the Pac. We know how to beat his offense - might not have the talent level year in and year out to do it but Shaw & Mason showed how to stop it. Also, there are now multiple Kelly-esque offenses in the conference compared to when he was a real outlier. The prep for it isn't as challenging & distracting as it once was.

Iron sharpens iron.

I say send him to the SEC.  What SEC school needs a new coach, has no academic standards and can right a brobdingnagian check?  That conference deserves someone like Kelly.

I guess if you are going to dis a conference for academic deficiencies, probably best to use right and write correctly.

and to answer your question, probably all except the Tennessee schools, one for academic reasons and the other for monetary reasons.

Re: Will Kelly be Coaching ND Football in 2018? - Snorlax94 - 06-26-2017

On multiple occasions, I've seen people imply that it's unfair to diss the SEC for the education it provides its student athletes.

I would have thought people would already have been familiar with statistics like these, but out of the Power 5 conferences, the SEC ranks dead last in graduation success rate. Out of the 14 schools, only 3 schools graduate at least 60 percent of the freshman class on-time.

http://www.educatedquest.com/smartest-power-5-football-conference/

Although, before we get too cocky, the Pac-12 was second-to-last, with only 4 out of 12 schools graduating 60%+ on-time.

For football programs, Stanford was #1 in gsr.  Clemson was #2 while winning the cfp!
http://time.com/4606863/college-football-top-25-2016-ranked-by-academics/

Then there is the question of the quality of the education the students are receiving. It's hard to come up with a measure, but I was curious about Nobel prize affiliations. Scanning the list of Nobel prizes, I think the Pac-12 would come first, although I'm not aware of any particular ranking (I didn't add up every conference, but my guess would be the Big 10 would come in second, the ACC third). Every single Pac-12 school has had at least one Nobel prize winner affiliated with them, with of course Berkeley and Stanford among the top in the world. Only 3 SEC schools (that I could find) have ever had a Nobel laureate affiliated with them -- ever (Vanderbilt, Florida and Tennessee). And even Vanderbilt has fewer than USC, Colorado, Washington, UCLA, Stanford and Berkeley, which is to say, even the top academic school in the SEC would fall in the bottom half of the Pac-12 in terms of Nobel prize affiliations. ::)

Great list.  Using the broadest possible definition (Graduate and attendee, long term academic staff, temporary academic staff), the totals per conference and per university are as follows:

Pac-12:  220 total, 18 1/3 per college on average

UCBerk 91
Stanford 64
UCLA 16
Washington 13
Colorado 11
U$C 7
Arizona State 5
Arizona 5
Utah 3
Washington State 2
Oregon 2
Oregon State 1

SEC:  17 total, just over one per college on average

Vanderbilt 7
Texas A&M 4
Florida 3
Mississippi 1
Arkansas 1
Tennessee 1
Alabama 0
Auburn 0
Louisiana State 0
Mississippi State 0
Georgia 0
Kentucky 0
Missouri 0
South Carolina 0

Big 10:  142 total, just over ten per college on average

Illinois 25
Minnesota 25
Michigan 20
Wisconsin 20
Northwestern 11
Purdue 10
Indiana 9
Maryland 7
Rutgers 5
Ohio State 4
Nebraska 3
Michigan St 2
Penn State 1
Iowa 0

ACC:  46 total, just over three per college on average

Duke 11
UNorth Carolina 8
Virginia 7
Pitt 6
Florida State 6
Georgia Tech 3
Virginia Tech 3
Notre Dame 1
Syracuse 1
Boston College 0
Clemson 0
Louisville 0
NC State 0
Wake Forest 0

Conclusion:  Pac-12 almost double that of Big 10 on a per college basis.  Significant drop off to ACC, which edges out SEC by a smidgen.

Trivia #1:  How many Pac-12 schools have more Nobel Prize winning affiliates than Noter Dame?  A: All of them, except Oregon State, which has just as many: one.

Trivia #2:  Which has more Nobel Prize laureate affiliates, UCLA or all SEC schools put together?  A: The SEC schools, by one: 17 to 16.

Yeah, but you missed the first part of the question; "what [sic] SEC school needs a new coach".

I guess this list is as good as any http://bamahammer.com/2017/04/05/alabama-football-sec-head-coaches-hot-seat-2017/.  Their five hot seat coaches are from:

Auburn
Ole Miss
Tennessee (though disqualified for monetary reasons... though, really?)
Texas A&M
Arkansas

BC

Re: Will Kelly be Coaching ND Football in 2018? - fullmetal - 06-26-2017

If kal can build a new stadium, a SAAHPC, and fire/hire a football coach...Tennessee can pony up for a chance at a winning coach.

Make that two programs that might not survive their own budgets in 10 years...

UCLA's football team has consistently outperformed C.al's when looking at academics. UCLA has been much more careful with admissions than C.al. C.al's new restrictions might bring them even with UCLA in that regard. Eventually. I know C.al grads don't want to hear that, but that is the way it is.
