Sydney Game: Events? -
owlcard - 06-24-2017
Howdy from Houston, Texas to all of the Stanford fans.
My name is Luke. I graduated from Rice in 2006, my wife Natalie from Stanford in 2006. We are fans of both schools, and have made it out to The Farm at least once a year for football for the past 7 years (and also for baseball when our schools are playing at Sunken Diamond). We probably bleed more Cardinal in our house, and follow Stanford sports from swimming and water polo to baseball and football to women's basketball.
I want to make sure that Natalie and I make it to events for both Stanford and Rice in Sydney. We arrive Friday morning before the game. I looked at the SAA Australia page and didn't see anything re: the game. Is the Stanford athletic department putting anything on for the game? Or is there an informal get together planned from Friday (before the game) onward? Since we arriving late in the week we didn't purchase the package thru Anthony Travel (dates don't meet up) so we have little information on Stanford's plans. I want Natalie to have the opportunity for her to attend the Stanford events...but I am the crazy one who frequents the sports message boards to look up stuff like this. Anyways, hope to see y'all in Sydney. Should be the experience of a lifetime.
Thanks! Go Card and Go Owls!

owlcard,
Welcome to the 'board. Jealous to hear you're making the trip Down Under. I know that there will be a Stanford Alumni Association (SAA) tailgate at a minimum, and probably many more events. (I also understand neither scatter band will be in attendance, but that's the Aussies' loss.) My best advice at this point is that Natalie makes sure her membership with the SAA is current, because that's how you hear about and register for their events. G'day mate!

owlcard, I'm pretty sure your wife and I were in the same dorm for a year :)
I would contact SAA and ask when they're planning the tailgate (they ought to be on top of this), and then ask them if any other events are planned. If you donate to the athletic department, you may try contacting the Buck/Cardinal club and asking if they're doing anything in Sydney.
Finally, look up any Stanford/Sydney alumni group information on the alumni club website (or Stanford-Australia in general) and make the appropriate inquiries.
Also, you can do the same for Rice if your schedule allows :)

Nope, no marching bands. No meeting of the scatter bands this year. Sigh.

"The Greatest Show on Earth"?? Well, I guess now that Ringling Bros. is no more...
And what about "8 Days 5 Nights"?? How does that work?
There's also this in-game attraction, apparently... -

"... and the canon!"
I guess the Catholics in Australia have heard about our band.

They've mistaken the toejam band for ours and victory for Pachabel's.

Stanford football has two NCAA national titles? I like the sound of that!

The Helms Foundation used to name a national college football champion each year and Stanford was honored twice: 1926 (10-0-1 record) and 1940 (10-0 record).

Thanks, DC 86. I was responding because the NCAA website--http://www.ncaa.com/history/football/fbs--only lists the 1926 title (shared with Alabama). According to the NCAA, Minnesota won 1940 mythical championship all by its lonesome.
By the way, if one considers proportionally football championships recognized by the NCAA (e.g. championship split between two teams, each get .5), the results come out as follows:
Yale (17)
Princeton (11.83)
N.otre D.ame (10.08)
Alabama (10.33)
U S C (7.5)
That's assuming my math is correct. Quite a run for the Ivy League from 1869-1900 and even up until 1922.
