OT RIP: Maryam Mirzakhani - BostonCard - 07-18-2017

Not sports related, but Stanford related.  Maryam Mirzakhani, who was the first and only female Fields Medal winner (the mathematics equivalent of the Nobel prize) passed away last week after a 4-year battle with breast cancer.  She had been a professor of mathematics since 2007.

Quote:“Maryam is gone far too soon, but her impact will live on for the thousands of women she inspired to pursue math and science,” said Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne. “Maryam was a brilliant mathematical theorist, and also a humble person who accepted honors only with the hope that it might encourage others to follow her path. Her contributions as both a scholar and a role model are significant and enduring, and she will be dearly missed here at Stanford and around the world.”

Really sad, and far too soon.

FWIW I thought this thread on Twitter regarding the Iranian media's reaction was very interesting: https://mobile.twitter.com/NegarMortazavi/status/887160986683179009

Thanks for sharing this. Really fascinating - one of the few times I can say I genuinely learned something interesting from a twitter discussion.
