Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - ColoradoTree - 08-08-2017

Today is the second and final round of stroke play at the U.S. Women's Amateur, and 5 current or incoming Cardinal players are in the field: senior Shannon Aubert, junior Sierra Kersten, sophomores Andrea Lee and Albane Valenzuela, and incoming freshman Mika Liu.

http://www.gostanford.com/news/2017/8/4/womens-golf-strong-presence.aspx

After two rounds of stroke play, the top 64 advance to match play.  Aubert, Lee, and Valenzuela were comfortably on track for that after yesterday's first round, coming in at -3, +1, and -2, respectively, with the first round leaders at -5.  But Aubert came out on fire today, making 8 birdies against just two bogeys for a 6-under 66.  She's in the clubhouse with a 4-shot lead, but functionally it's a 6-shot lead, since -3 is the best score carried by a player still on the course.  Lee also did well today, shooting a 69 (5 birdies, 2 bogeys) to put herself in the top 10 at -2 (currently tied for seventh place).  Valenzuela is still out on the course, even par for the day through the front nine, leaving her tied with Lee at -2.  But barring an epic collapse (a +4 score should get you into the top 64), she should be in good shape for match play.

A different story for Kersten (+13, second round complete) and Liu (+9, still 5 holes to go).

There are still some great golfers on the course, but to be the medalist at the U.S. Women's Amateur and carry the top seed into match play is a heck of an achievement.  Aubert has to be absolutely thrilled with her day.

Collegiate players are accustomed to fine, exceptionally well maintained golf courses. I have heard that the course conditioning of  San Diego Country Club (host of the 2017 US Womens Am) is really something very special.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-08-2017

In addition to the three current Stanford players--and consider what a team Stanford has that their #3 is likely to be the medalist--2010 commit Rachel Heck (Nashville) is assured of moving on.  She finished at plus-two, tied for 27th.

And likely 2011 commit Lucy Li (Redwood Shores), a wunderkind who qualified for the US Women's Open at age 11, should also make the final 64.  She's at plus-four, tied for 47th, still with holes to play.

Hulk, do you mean 2020 and 2021 commits (instead of 2010 and 2011)?

Speaking of amateur golf, I will be at the US Amateur next week in Los Angeles, definitely Monday and maybe another day. If anyone else plans to attend, let me know.  Stroke play begins Monday at Riviera and Bel Air with match play starting Wednesday at Riviera.  The real attraction for me is to get inside the guard gate and walk the course at Bel Air.

I played Bel Air quite a long time ago and it is a very pleasant and entertaining course.  The best part of the club is its membership.  One hears that it is full of celebrities (it is) and is therefore superficial and banal (it is not).  I met a handful of other members that day, on the course and in the clubhouse, and found them to be open and welcoming.  They apparently had just returned Kevin James his initiation fees and kicked him out because he was an obnoxious, pompous ass and everyone was still cackling with grade school satisfaction.

Bel Air, imo, is the most fun of the LA big 3 (LA North, Riviera, and Bel Air).  more routed and confined due to canyon than the other 2 but lots of variety.  it used to be no shorts, not sure if that is still true or not.  initiation probably runs $150K or so.  if invited, don't pass up LA North.  great great track.  post golf cocktails outside can be pretty spectacular.

I got to play LA North in 2009 thanks to a member who was a UCLA MBA classmate (also a Notre Dame alum).  Loved everything about the experience. I took his money that day.  Maybe that's why he has not asked me back.

Sorry, Spriny--yes, 2020 and 2021.

Maybe it just seemed preposterous to write "2020" commit.

Li was born at Stanford Hospital and is home schooled through an online course created by Stanford.

If you get a chance, check out the video of her swing or head to San Diego CC to see it in person today.  Back, down, done.  So simple.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - BobK - 08-09-2017

We have a 2020 baseball commit and a 2020 women's soccer commit, so right on Hulk.

More on Heck

Aubert (#1), Valenzuela (#13), Lee (#9), 2020 commit Heck (#29) and likely future commit Li (#48) have all qualified for the round of 64.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - ColoradoTree - 08-09-2017

Here are the tee times and opponents for the Round of 64 this morning:

* Aubert (1, -9) tees off against Samantha Hutchison (64, +6) (USA, UC Davis) at 9:20am. Hutchison qualified in 64th position after a 3-hole playoff among the +6 golfers.
* Lee (T-7, -2) tees off against Sarah Rhee (T-46, +5) (USA, UW) at 10:20am
* Valenzuela (T-11, -1) tees off against Wad Phaewchimplee (T-46, +5) (Thailand, '17 Kent State grad) at 11:00am

Also, Lucy Li (T-46, +5) is at 9:50am vs. Mariel Galdiano (T-11, -1) (USA, UCLA), and Heck (T-23, +2) is at 10:50am vs. Brooke Seay (T-31, +3) (USA, HS junior in San Diego area).

Interesting to see the French flag next to Aubert's name, even though she's lived in the U.S. so long that I've never picked up an accent* when I've heard her interviewed.  But after looking at her bio, I realized she's had a number of terrific international opportunities as a member of either French junior teams or European junior teams, so it seems like the easy and right call for her to represent the country of her birth.  She's had a pretty darn cool life from what I can tell.

* EDIT: Apparently this is because she grew up speaking English to her mom, who was a competitive figure skater for the South African national team, while she spoke French with her dad, a French professional skier.  You know, as one does.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - ColoradoTree - 08-09-2017

Aubert is all square through 3 in her match.  She was 1 down after bogeying the first hole, but answered right back by winning the second hole.

Match play.  Sigh.  It's only the third hole of the day and I'm biting my fingernails.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - ColoradoTree - 08-09-2017

More back and forth. Hutchison took the 4th to go 1 up, but Aubert answered with a birdie at the 5th to get it back to all square.  Were this stroke play, they'd both be at +1 through 5.

Li is AS through 1.  Lee is still playing the 1st.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - ColoradoTree - 08-09-2017

Aubert takes her first lead of the day, going 1 up after making par at the 6th, and then following it up with a birdie on 7 to take a 2-up lead.  She seems to have found a groove, having won three straight holes.  (I know it's irrelevant, but she's even par on the day now, while Hutchison is +2.)

Li is 1 up through 4 holes, having birdied the par-5 second.  Both players are playing well, with Li -2 and Galdiano -1.

The USGA did a nice story on the medalist - http://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/championships/2017/u-s--women-s-amateur/articles/world-is-oyster-for-medalist--stanford-star-aubert.html

All 5 of those players are in the same half of the bracket.  It looks like the soonest we could have a Stanford vs. Stanford match up would be the round of 16.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - ColoradoTree - 08-09-2017

A further update now that all 5 Stanford (or potential Stanford) golfers have played a few holes:

* Aubert is knocking on the door, up 5 through 13.  She had a string of 4 straight hole wins (5-8) where she went from 1 down to 3 up.  To par, she's -2 on the day.

* Li is 1 up through 9.  She lost her lead after a bogey at 5, but gained it right back by getting a birdie on 6.  To par, she's -2 on the day.

* Lee is AS through 7.  To par, she's -1 on the day.

* Heck is AS through 5. She won the first two holes, but just gave one back at 4 and another at 5.  To par, she's -1 on the day.

* Valenzuela is 2 down through 4.  She's at even par.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - oldalum - 08-09-2017

Aubert won 6 and 4.
Lee and Valenzuela are now down 1. Lee has a good opponent (Rhee from UW); in the NCAA semifinals as a freshman she holed out from a bunker to win the match for UW, sending UW to the finals where she barely lost to Stackhouse.

Re: Women's Golf at the U.S. Amateur - ColoradoTree - 08-09-2017

Update:

* Aubert won 6 & 4
* Li is up 3 through 14.
* Lee is AS through 13. (She birdied 12 to get back to AS.)
* Heck is AS through 9.
* Valenzuela is up 1 through 9. (She birdied 7 to get back to AS, and won the 9th to go 1 up.)
