Live scrimmage - BostonCard - 08-13-2017

Any reports from "the rail"?

Re: Live scrimmage - CardinalSagehen - 08-13-2017

I would have a better report for you, but I was busy keeping my kids entertained and watching the scrimmage out of the corner of my eye.  Here's what I noticed in-between getting face-paintings, collecting free bookmarks and pom-poms, and buying frozen lemonades (pro tip - though loaded with sugar, frozen lemonades tend to keep kids busy scooping for quite some time...)

1) Chryst played the first series or two.  The offense scored a TD but it was aided by penalties, including a key PI in the end zone by ShowtimeQM.

2) The starting OL made some holes for Bryce on the first drive and he looked good.  But in general, for whatever it's worth, the defense seemed to dominate this scrimmage, following the pattern of last season.

3) Colby Parkinson made an amazing TD catch on a deep pass to the corner of the end zone, going high into the air over his opposite shoulder.  It was well defended but there was only so much any DB could do.  I think he made one or two other catches over the middle, too.

4) Connor Wedington caught a pass out of the slot and make a couple guys miss, badly.  He had the audacity, or perhaps the confidence, to be wearing #5.  He played early and more than I would have expected.  As others have speculated, I'm guessing he's not redshirting.

5) Seemed like Costello was playing with the second team and Burns with the third team.

6) Notably, we did not see the following players in pads:
Burkett (leg?)
AT Hall
Speights (he told me afterward it was an ankle, "that's football")
Phillips (although nothing seemed wrong with him and this seemed precautionary)

7) Mike Tyler was on crutches (but in full pads) after the game with an apparent ankle or lower leg injury.  I didn't see the injury on the field, but I assume it occurred during today's scrimmage.

8 ) From my colleague, who is married to one of our assistant coaches, I found out that the team is leaving for Australia next Saturday and getting to enjoy themselves in Sydney on Monday and Tuesday (Zoo, Opera House, etc.)  Very few have been outside the country and almost none have been to Australia, so this will be a big experience for them!

9) I was a bit distracted and didn't look for Sarell and Little, although I know they were there and saw them in the pre-scrimmage drills.

That's all I got!

The zoo has a Komodo Dragon who is awesome. I'd love to have him as a house pet. Feed him rodents and cheeseburgers.

I would also recommend the botanical garden in Sydney, which is pretty amazing and full of plant species you simply don't see outside of Australia. Maybe slide, a former resident, can chime in with other recommended must-sees.

Re: Live scrimmage - Durty Nelly - 08-14-2017

Visit the Rocks and have a pint in the old pubs--Fortune of War, Mercantile, Lord Nelson.

Take the ferry to the Zoo and/or Manly.

Cook your own steak at Phillips Foote in the Rocks or The Oaks in Neutral Bay.

Dine in Chinatown Sydney.

Have a seafood lunch in Watson's Bay.

Lots of BYO dining where you bring your own wine and pay a small corkage.

Kings Cross is tame now.

Difficult not to have a great time in Sydney.

Wish I could be there for the game.  Lived in Sydney for 10 years.

I think I'm the only Aussie on this board, but I'm a Melburnian, not a Sydneysider, so my advice might be pretty biased...

The one thing I'd recommend if you have the time is to take the train up to the Blue Mountains - check out Katoomba or go bushwalking to see the Three Sisters.

I'd also check if there are any interesting concerts on at the opera house one evening (it's not just opera - I've seen several bands perform there over the years).

Re: Live scrimmage - Phogge - 08-14-2017

We saw "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Opera House and though usually don't take tours did the Opera House Tour the same day. fantastic. Stayed at the Park Hyatt and had a view of the place. Were able to stroll over.

GREAT REPORT.  PRETTY MUCH WHAT I SAW WHEN I WASN'T CHASING MY 5 YEAR OLD AND LEAVING EARLY.  OUR CORNERS LOOKED GREAT, OUR OFFENSE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING.  OUR QB LOOKS AVERAGE AND WE DON'T HAVE A RUNNING BACK.  OL LOOKED PHYSICALLY IMPRESSIVE.  WITH ALL THE GUYS NOT DRESSED IT'S HARD TO GAUGE MUCH, AND IT'S NOTORIOUSLY HARD TO LEARN ANYTHING SCRIMMAGING AGAINST YOURSELF ANYWAY.  THE ONLY GUYS WHO REALLY STOOD OUT TO ME WERE THE CB'S AND THE ONE RECEIVER.

I take it you are not impressed with Love. Interesting, given how highly Shaw has praised him.
