Stanford in the US Amateur -
Spiny_Norman - 08-15-2017
All 4 Stanford golfers have completed their 36 hole medal play.Â
McNealy - overcame an awful triple bogey 7 on his 2nd hole yesterday to shoot 2-over 72 on the tougher Riviera layout. Played better today on the shorter (but still really tough) Bel Air CC course. Carded a 67. At -1, he is certain to advance to match play.
Wu - shot 75-72 and will miss the match play cut
Boote - shot 76-70 and will miss the match play cut
Huang - shot 74-80 and will miss the match play cut
I walked Bel Air yesterday morning. Fantastic layout. It was great fun watching the college (and younger) players play a shorter course that requires a certain amount of precision. Not everyone figured it out. Saw two players toss their balls in the creek in frustration after the 12th hole.
Went over to Riviera and followed McNealy in the afternoon. Only a few other Stanford fans there but one of them was Andrea Lee from the women's golf team. Always a pleasure to chat with Stanford athletes.
If McNealy makes it to Friday, I hope to be able to go back out to watch.

Thanks for the update.  Any of our recruits playing?

Thanks for reminding me. Karl Vilips (commitment for 2020) shot 76-78 and will not advance. Neither of Stanford's recruits for next fall Ashwin Arasu and Nate Menon were in the field.
Bradley Knox was close to making the field in LA. He was one of the alternates at local qualifying.

McNealy is the #17 seed in the field of 64 based on his qualifying score. He draws a really tough opponent in the 1st round. He plays Connor Syme from Scotland. He was the Australian Amateur champ last year and is the #8 ranked amateur in the world. McNealy is ranked #2. Should be a great match!Â
They start at 9:10 am. You can follow the live scoring here -

Knox and Salinda are playing in the Northern Cal Match Play championship at Spyglass this week. Knox finished 2nd and Salinda finished 4th in the stroke play portion. Knox's 9 under for two rounds would have been the all-time record (breaking McNealy's 8 under from a few years ago), but for the Kal golfer who went 10 under.
Match play in that event starts today.

Not Stanford related, but the big match at the Am today is Joaquin Niemann (#1 at WAGR, #6 at SPWAR) and Braden Thornberry (NCAA champ and #3 at WAGR and #2 at SPWAR).

I watched both of them play on Monday. They were paired together for qualifying Monday and Tuesday and now they get to go head to head. Man, I wish that I could get out to Riviera this afternoon to see that match. However, my consolation is that FS1 coverage starts at 2 pm pacific.

Knox and Salinda each won their round of 32 matches in the NorCal match play by 6 and 5 scores. Each was 6 under par when they clinched on the 13th hole. Round of 16 matches later today.
McNealy is in a dog fight at the Am. Down 1 with 3 to play.

McNealy lost 2 and 1, which ends Stanford's participation in this year's Amateur.
